Sociologist, PhD from the Rio de Janeiro University Research Institute (IUPERJ), master's degree in Social Service from the University of Chicago (School of Social Service Administration) and a degree in Psychology from Santa Úrsula University. She is a professor in the Department of Social Work at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (undergraduate and graduate levels) and director of the International Center for Studies and Research on Childhood (CIESPI) in partnership with PUC-Rio. Internationally, she served as President of the International Child Research Exchange Network, Childwatch International (2002-2009) and was a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame (2006) in the Department of Social Sciences with a focus on Latin American Studies acquiring a post-Doctoral degree from the Institute for International Studies. Irene Rizzini received the Guggenheim Award for 2008-2009 and The Global Citizens Award (2016). She served as a visiting professor (Leverhulme professorship grant) at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, from August to November 2017, associated with the Center for Research on Families and Relationships (August - November 2017). She actively participates in various editorial boards of national and international scientific journals, including the magazine Katalysis (Federal University of Santa Catarina), Childhood, The Global Journal of Child Research, SAGE Journal, England, International Journal of Social Welfare, University of Stockholm and International Journal of Child Maltreatment, United States.

Em âmbito internacional foi Presidente da Rede internacional de intercâmbio de pesquisa na área da infância Childwatch International Research Network, 2002-2009 e foi professora visitante na Universidade de Notre Dame em Ciências Sociais com foco em Estudos Latino-americanos em 2006, realizando seu Pós-Doutorado junto ao Institute for International Studies.
