Roumen Kirov

Roumen Kirov, M.D. and Ph.D., is Associate Professor in the Department of Cognitive Psychophysiology of the Institute of Neurobiology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria. Dr. Kirov is currently a Senior Researcher of several Bulgarian, German-Bulgarian, Swiss-Bulgarian, and English-Italian-Bulgarian scientific projects that deal with various aspects of sleep research, clinical neurophysiology, cognitive science, psychiatry, and psychopathology, and psychology. He is also a lecturer at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria and practitioner in Sleep Medicine and Clinical Neurophysiology in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology at the St. Naum University Hospital (Sofia, Bulgaria).Dr. Kirov achieved his Master?s Degree in Medicine in the Medical University of Sofia, Bulgaria, and specialized Psychiatry in the Regional Hospital of Pernik, Bulgaria. He obtained his Ph.D. in the Institute of Physiology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria for research on pharmacology of sleep regulation and age-related changes in sleep and in electroencephalogram/multi-unit activities in animal models of normal and pathological aging. Dr. Kirov also specialized in Clinical Electroencephalography and Polysomnography in the Clinic for Neurology at the Medical University of Sofia, Bulgaria. He was awarded a German Foundation for Scientific Research Fellowship for post-doctoral study of Sleep Medicine, Psychiatriy and Clinical Psychology at the Medical University of Goettingen, Germany. Next, he worked as a Senior Researcher for investigating effects of oscillating trans-cranial direct current stimulation, applied in different sleep and wake stages, on human cognitive and psychological processes at the Medical University of Luebeck, Germany.Dr. Kirov has completed over 1,200 peer reviews for more than 80 recognized international journals and several European and Bulgarian scientific projects. He served as a Guest Associate Editor of Frontiers in Psychology, specialty section Cognitive Science during years 2014-2016, and finalized his research topic by editing a Frontiers E-Book entitled ?BRAIN OSCILLTIONS AND PREDICTIVE CODING: WHAT WE KNOW AND WHAT WE SHOULD LEARN.? Dr. Kirov now serves as an associate editor of the journals Frontiers in Psychology and Frontiers in Psychiatry (specialty section Psychopathology) and is member of editorial boards of the journals Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment, Nature and Science of Sleep, Austin Journal of Sleep Disorders, and American Journal of Life Sciences. Dr. Kirov is a member of several international scientific organizations including European Psychiatric Association, International Society of Psychophysiological Research, International Union of Physiological Sciences, World Sleep Organization, and others.Dr. Kirov?s main research focuses include understanding the role for sleep, dreaming and sleep and wake EEG rhythms in memory procecess, emotion, creativity, and neurobehavioral functions in health and psychopathology, investigating developmental and age-related changes in cognitive functions, psychopathological conditions and sleep-wake EEG patterns, exploring effects of brain oscillations and effects of their modulation on human cognition, and understanding dream?s role for psychopathology and well-being. He has authored over 70 original and review articles, book chapters and books in different fields of sleep research, psychiatry, neurology, and cognitive neuroscience. His fields of experience include Sleep Research, Clinical Neurophysiology, Psychiatry, Learning and Memory, Development and Aging, Brain Stimulation, Psychopharmacology, Psychology and Psychophysiology, Dreaming, and Animal Models of Neuropsychiatric Disorders.
