Sergio Ferraz Novaes
Ele é Professor Titular da Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp). Obteve o Bacharelado e Doutorado em Física pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP) e fez estágio de Pós-Doutorado no Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley, EUA). Foi pesquisador visitante na Universidade de Wisconsin (Madison, EUA), Universidade de Valência (Espanha) e no Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Chicago, EUA). Foi cofundador do Advanced Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2). Foi líder do grupo paulista da Colaboração Dzero do Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). Atualmente é membro da Colaboração CMS da Organização Europeia para Pesquisa Nuclear (CERN) e líder do grupo do CMS em São Paulo. Desde 2003, é Pesquisador Responsável dos Projetos Temáticos da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (Fapesp), que vem apoiando as atividades do Centro de Pesquisa e Análise de São Paulo (SPRACE). Ele e sua equipe implantaram o GridUnesp, o primeiro Campus Grid na América Latina e atualmente é Diretor Científico do Núcleo de Computação Científica da Unesp. Ele foi PI de vários projetos de P&D com o setor privado (Padtec, Intel, Huawei, etc.) que incluem o Intel Parallel Computing Center (IPCC), o Center of Excellence in Machine Learning e o desenvolvimento do Kytos, um novo controlador SDN open-source, com o apoio da Huawei. Ele e sua equipe tem parceria de mais de uma década com o California Institute of Technology (Caltech) nas demonstrações da conferência SuperComputing onde quebraram por três vezes o recorde de transmissão de dados entre hemisférios Norte e Sul. Foi membro do International Committee for Future Accelerators, ICFA (2005-2007), representante brasileiro na Particles and Fields Commission (C11) da International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, IUPAP (2012-2021) e membro do Comitê Técnico e Científico da Rede Nacional de Física de Alta Energia, Renafae (2008-2018). Foi indicado pelo Ministro da Ciência e Tecnologia para compor a força-tarefa que deu início às negociações para o Brasil tornar-se Membro Associado do CERN. Ele liderou vários programas de divulgação científica, como a ?Estrutura Elementar da Matéria: um Cartaz em cada Escola?, que distribuiu cartazes para 25 mil escolas do Ensino Médio no Brasil e o SPRACE Game que foi traduzido para o inglês e alemão. Ele coordenou vários acordos internacionais com os EUA (Madison, MIT e Texas Tech), Reino Unido (Edimburgo, Southampton e Imperial College) e Portugal (IST, Lisboa). Foi membro do Comitê Assessor da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa de São Paulo, Fapesp (1997-2000) e do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, CNPq (2009-2012), além de Coordenador Científico (1990-1996) e Vice-Diretor (1996-1999) do Instituto de Física Teórica da Unesp.

He is Full Professor of Physics at the São Paulo State University (Unesp). He obtained the B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the University of São Paulo (USP) and he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley, USA). He was visiting researcher at the University of Wisconsin (Madison, USA), University of Valencia (Spain), and at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Chicago, USA). He started his scientific career as a theoretical physicist working on particle phenomenology and field theory and, by the end of the 90's, he became an experimental high energy physicist at the DZero Collaboration from Fermilab, and currently he is member of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Collaboration from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (Cern). He is the leader of the CMS group in São Paulo and the Principal Investigator of Thematic Project from São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) that supports the activities of the São Paulo Research and Analysis Center (SPRACE) since 2003. He and his team deployed the GridUnesp, the first Campus Grid in Latin America, a spin-off of the participation in the LHC experiment. He is the Scientific Director of the Center for Scientific Computing from Unesp and co-founder of Advanced Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2). He has been the PI of several R&D projects in association with the private sector (Padtec, Intel, Huawei) which include an Intel Parallel Computing Center (IPCC) and a Center of Excellence in Machine Learning, and the development of a new SDN Controller (Kytos) funded by Huawei. He and his team have a partnership for more than a decade with Caltech which set the record of data transmission between the North and South Hemispheres three times during the bandwidth challenges at the SuperComputing conferences. He is the Brazilian representative to the Particles and Fields Commission (C11) from the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, IUPAP (2012-2020) and he was member of the International Committee for Future Accelerators, ICFA (2005-2007), and of the Technical and Scientific Committee of the National Network for High Energy Physics, Renafae (2008-2018). He led several outreach programs such as the Elementary Structure of Matter: A Chart in Every School, which distributed a chart to 25,000 Middle Schools in Brazil and the SPRACE Game translated to English and German. He
is the Scientific Director of the Management Committee of the Center of Technological Research in Oil and Gas of the Santos Basin (CTBS). He coordinated several international agreements with USA (Madison, MIT, and Texas Tech), United Kingdom (Edinburgh, Southampton, and Imperial College), and Portugal (IST, Lisbon). He was member of the Advisory Committee of São Paulo Research Foundation, Fapesp (1997-2000) and National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, CNPq (2009-2012), and the Scientific Coordinator (1990-1996) and Deputy Director (1996-1999) of the Institute of Theoretical Physics from Unesp.
