Samuel Julio Martins
I earned my B.S. in Agronomy from the Federal University of Lavras Brazil, as well as an M.S. and Ph.D. in plant pathology from the same institution, with part of his Ph.D. completed at the University of Delaware. From 2015 to 2017 I served as a Substitute Professor at the Federal University of Goias Brazil, where I taught IPM and General Plant Pathology and spent the next 3 years as a postdoctoral researcher at Penn State University. At Penn State I was engaged in research involving blotch on mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) with the ultimate goal of providing the industry with biologically based disease management tactics to add to the environmental management practices already in place.I joined the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Florida in 2020 as an Assistant Professor, with responsibilities in teaching (50) and research (50). I teach the courses "PLP2000: Plants, Plagues People" and "What Are Plants Talking About?". My research focuses on investigating the structure and function of bacteria in the phytobiome and their impact on plant health. I am particularly interested in understanding the mechanisms underlying the microbe-microbe and plant-microbe interactions leading to increased resilience plants against biotic and abiotic stresses.
