Maarten Pieterjan Maria Vanhove

Maarten P.M. Vanhove graduated in as a doctor in Science (Biology, 2012) and a master in Biology (2006, specializing in Animal Ecology, Morphology and Biodiversity) and in Social and Cultural Anthropology (2007) at the KU Leuven (Belgium). During his PhD, he was a fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders at the same university, associated with the Royal Museum for Central Africa. Currenly post-doctoral researcher at Masaryk University (Czech Republic). Previous post-doctoral stays include the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Greece), the Natural History Museum (United Kingdom) and the University of Leuven (Belgium). Current research focuses on the evolution of teleost fishes and their monogenean flatworm parasites. Side projects dealing with biodiversity of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates (e.g. various insect and crustacean taxa) and with applications of sequence analysis in other fields (e.g. forensics, aquaculture). Approaches include morphological and molecular taxonomy, (phylo)genetics, historical biogeography and co-speciation testing. Previous work includes rest pool ecology and macroinvertebrate communities, and morphology and hatching of cladoceran resting eggs. Author or co-author of 29 international peer-reviewed publications. Referee assignments for 18 journals and a funding agency. Tutored 3 MSc and 2 BSc students. Teaching assistant at university courses of Genetics and of Animal Diversity. Representative in various university councils. Supervisor of a PhD student, and future visiting professor, at Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia). Laureate of the Jacques Kets Prize for Biology (Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp, 2002). Third prize and Honorary Award at the 14th European Union Contest for Young Scientists (2002). Various prizes at the 7th International Symposium on Monogenea (Brazil, 2013), among which "best young researcher presentation". PhD thesis awarded with the Henri Schouteden Prize by the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (2013).Participant in field trips in France, Greece, the United Kingdom, Benin, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Expedition leader in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Zambia.
