Mateus Cardoso Silva

I am a PhD student in Physical Geography at the University of Exeter, UK, under the supervision of Toby Pennington and Lucy Rowland. Previously, I received an undergraduate degree in Biology from the Federal University of Lavras with an internship period at the Federal University of Pernambuco. I also received a master's degree in Ecology from the University of Campinas (Unicamp) under the supervision of Rafael Oliveira. During my master's, I was awarded a Fapesp scholarship (BP-MS, 19/24619-6) and a fully-funded internship to the University of Exeter as a delegate of the University of Cambridge's Student Conference in Conservation Science (1652/SCCS2020). My PhD project is developed in collaboration with WWF-UK and WWF-Brazil and seeks for strategies to facilitate the large-scale restoration of the Brazilian Cerrado region, aiming for fostering synergies between biodiversity recovery and climate adaptation and mitigation. My broad interests range from plant functional ecology to biogeography and conservation of tropical savannas. My main study systems so far cover forest-savanna transitions, mistletoe-tree pairs, and old-growth and restored savannas.
