José Bernardo Rodrigues Brilha

Graduation in Geology (University of Coimbra, 1987) and PhD in 1997 by the Universities of Minho (Portugal) and Poitiers (France). Full Professor at the University of Minho (Braga, Portugal) since 2017 and Director of the Earth Sciences Research Centre. He was Director of the Master Course on Geological Heritage and Geoconservation, Director of the Earth Sciences Department, Vice-President of the Sciences School, and Visiting Researcher at the University of São Paulo. Member of the UNESCO's Global Geopark Evaluation Team and IGCP Scientific Board, of the World Commission on Protected Areas - IUCN and of its Geoheritage Specialist Group, and of the Advisory Board of the Geoheritage Institute of Middle East. He was President of ProGEO (European Association for the Conservation of the Geological Heritage), coordinator of the ?Working Group Geoheritage Assessment? of the IUGS's ?International Commission on Geoheritage?, and member of the Advisory Group of Global Geoparks Network (UNESCO), IUGS Geoheritage Task Group, Portuguese Commitee of Geosciences UNESCO-IGCP and of the Portuguese Committee of Geoparks. Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Geoheritage (Springer). Currently develops applied research on geodiversity and geoconservation.

Possui graduação em Geologia pela Universidade de Coimbra (1987). É doutorado em Ciências (Geologia) pela Universidade do Minho e pela Universidade de Poitiers, França (1997). É Professor Catedrático da Escola de Ciências da Universidade do Minho e Director do Centro de Ciências da Terra. Foi Diretor do Curso de Mestrado em Património Geológico e Geoconservação, Diretor do Departamento de Ciências da Terra e Vice-Presidente da Escola de Ciências da mesma universidade. Foi Pesquisador Visitante Especial do Programa Ciência sem Fronteiras na Universidade de São Paulo. É membro da UNESCO's Global Geopark Evaluation Team e do IGCP Scientific Board, da World Commission on Protected Areas da IUCN e do respetivo Geoheritage Specialist Group. Foi Presidente da ProGEO (European Association for the Conservation of the Geological Heritage), coordenador do ?Working Group Geoheritage Assessment? da ?International Commission on Geoheritage? da IUGS e membro do Advisory Group da Global Geoparks Network (UNESCO), do IUGS Geoheritage Task Group, do Comité Nacional para as Geociências da UNESCO-IGCP e do Fórum Português de Geoparques. Foi co-fundador e editor da revista internacional Geoheritage (Springer). Dedica-se, atualmente, a desenvolver trabalhos, de investigação fundamental e aplicada, na área da geoconservação, em Portugal e no estrangeiro.
