Simone Ferreira de Athayde

Simone holds a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the Federal University of Paraná (1992), a Master's degree in Botany from the Federal University of Paraná (1997), a Master's degree in Ethnobotany from the University of Kent in England (2003) and a Doctorate in Interdisciplinary Ecology with a concentration in Anthropology from the University of Florida (2010). She has specializations in Environmental Education, Human Ecology and Tropical Conservation and Development. She currently serves as Associate Professor at the Department of Sociocultural and Global Studies (GSS) and the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) at Florida International University (FIU), headquartered in Miami, FL, USA. She is one of the coordinators of the International Research Network on Hydroelectric Dams in the Amazon (ADN/RBA/RIRA). She is the lead author of the Science Panel for the Amazon, and coordinating lead author of the Report on Values Assessment of the United Nations Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). In Brazil, she is a Collaborating Professor at the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT) and a collaborating researcher in several civil society organizations. She has experience and academic interest in the areas of inter and transdisciplinarity, socio-environmental governance, sociobiodiversity conservation, integrative research on the impacts of hydroelectric dams, indigenous and local knowledge systems, participatory management of natural resources, socio-environmental justice and sustainability. In recent years, she has received several national and international awards, with her doctoral thesis being awarded an Outstanding Dissertation in Tropical Conservation and Development by the University of Florida.

Simone possui graduação em Licenciatura em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (1992), mestrado em Botânica pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (1997), mestrado em Etnobotânica pela Universidade de Kent na Inglaterra (2003) e doutorado em Ecologia Interdisciplinar com concentração em Antropologia pela Universidade da Flórida (2010). Possui especializações em Educação Ambiental, Ecologia Humana e Conservação e Desenvolvimento Tropical. Atualmente, atua como Professora Associada do Departamento de Estudos Socioculturais e Globais (GSS) e do Centro Kimberly Green de Estudos Latinoamericanos e Caribenhos (LACC) na Universidade Internacional da Flórida (FIU), sediada em Miami, FL, EUA. É uma das coordenadoras da Rede Internacional de Pesquisa em Barragens Hidrelétricas na Amazônia (ADN/RBA/RIRA). É autora líder do Science Panel for the Amazon (Painel Científico da Amazônia), e autora coordenadora líder do Relatório sobre Valores da Natureza (Values Assessment) da Plataforma Ciência-Políticas sobre Biodiversidade e Serviços Ecossistêmicos da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU). No Brasil, é professora colaboradora da Universidade Federal do Tocantins (UFT) e pesquisadora colaboradora em diversas organizações da sociedade civil. Tem experiência e interesse acadêmico nas áreas de inter e transdisciplinaridade, governança socioambiental, conservação da sociobiodiversidade, pesquisa integrativa sobre os impactos das barragens hidrelétricas, sistemas de conhecimento indígenas e locais, gestão participativa de recursos naturais, justiça socioambiental e sustentabilidade. Nos últimos anos, recebeu vários prêmios nacionais e internacionais, sendo sua tese de doutorado premiada pela Universidade da Flórida.
