Gustavo Barreto de Melo

Dr. Melo graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Sergipe (2004). He completed his medical residency in ophthalmology at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in 2008. He did specialization/improvement in Retina and Vitreous and was preceptor/head of the medical residency at UNIFESP from 2008 to 2010. In 2011, he completed his PhD in ophthalmology at the UNIFESP and postdoctoral fellow at the Schepens Eye Research Institute/Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (Harvard Medical School) in retinal stem cells. In 2018 and 2019, he completed a new post-doctorate in Ophthalmology at UNIFESP. He is currently an ophthalmologist at Hospital de Olhos de Sergipe. He also served as Coordinator of the Specialization Course in Ophthalmology at the same institution from 2012 to 2022, and as President of the Sergipe Society of Ophthalmology from 2018 to 2020. Fellow of the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training 2020-2021 at Harvard Medical School. Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Retina and Vitreous. Affiliate Professor at the Federal University of São Paulo/Paulista School of Medicine

Possui graduação em Medicina pela Universidade Federal de Sergipe (2004). Concluiu a residência médica em oftalmologia na Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) em 2008. Fez especialização/aperfeiçoamento em Retina e Vítreo e foi preceptor/chefe da residência médica da UNIFESP entre 2008 a 2010. Em 2011, concluiu seu doutorado em oftalmologia pela UNIFESP e pós-doutorado no Schepens Eye Research Instute/Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (Harvard Medical School) em células-tronco da retina. Em 2018 e 2019, concluiu novo pós-doutorado em Oftalmologia na UNIFESP. Atualmente, é oftalmologista do Hospital de Olhos de Sergipe. Foi Coordenador do Curso de Especialização em Oftalmologia da mesma instituição entre 2012 e 2022. Presidente da Sociedade Sergipana de Oftalmologia de abril de 2018 a abril de 2020. Fellow do Global Clinical Scholars Research Training 2020-2021 da Harvard Medical School. Editor-Chefe do International Journal of Retina and Vitreous. Professor Afiliado da Universidade Federal de São Paulo/Escola Paulista de Medicina (UNIFESP/EPM).
