His main activities include teaching (undergraduate medical students, psychiatric residents and graduate students), research (mostly clinical investigations on mood disorders and quality of life) and clinical practive (mainly with patients suffering from mood disorders).
Dr Fleck has authored over 147 papers, most of them published in internationally-indexed peer-review journals. As of July 2012, he has supervised 18 MSc and 6 PhD students and he is currently supervising 6 PhD and 2 Post-doctoral students. His teaching activities with psychiatric residents include both seminars on mood disorders and daily rounds on the clinical follow-up of inpatients and outpatients, as well as supervision and training in interpersonal psychotherapy for major depression. He is also involved in teaching undergraduate students, and is currently responsible for the clinical rotation in psychiatry for 4th-year medical students. Moreover, he regularly supervises undergraduate students who received scientific initiation bursaries.
Dr Fleck coordinates the Mood Disorders Program and the Eletroconvulsivetherapy Unit at the University-affliated Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA),
He was also the Editor-in-chief of the Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria (Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry) for 5 years, the official journal of the Brazilian Psychiatric Association, which is officially considered the second scientific journal overall and the first in the field of mental health in Latin America. Moreover, Dr Fleck was the chair of the committee in charge of developing the Brazilian Guidelines for the Treatment of Depression, which was sponsored by the Brazilian Medical Association. Furthermore, he is the coordinator of the Brazilian Centre of the WHOQOL Group (World Health Organization?s Quality of Life Group). He also holds a research scholarship from the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology, which is offered to the most productive researchers in the country.
Internationally, he is a member of the International Society of Quality of Life, the American Psychiatric Association, and was a consultant for quality of life studies of the World Health Organization and a member of the WHOQOL Group.
Professor Titular de Psiquiatria - Departamento de Psiquiatria e Medicina Legal da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Ex-Editor Chefe da Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria, Membro da Comissão Coordenadora do Programa de Pós-Gradução em Psiquiatria da UFGRS. Coordenador do Programa de Transtornos de Humor do Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Coordenador do Grupo WHOQOL (World Health Organization Quality of Life Group) no Brasil, consultor temporário da Organização Mundial da Saúde. International Fellow da American Psychiatric Association. Membro consultor do ICHOM (International Consortium of Health Outcomes Measurement).
