Paulo Marchiori Buss

Paulo M. Buss, MD, MPH, D.Sc. is Emeritus Professor of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), Full Professor of the National School of Public Health since 1977 and Director of FIOCRUZ Center for Global Health since January 2009. Elected by their colleagues and appointed by the President of the Republic of Brazil, he was President of FIOCRUZ for two mandates, between January 2001 and December 2008. Dr. Buss was also elected twice as Director of the FIOCRUZ National School of Public Health (1989-1992 and 1998-2000), Deputy Director of the same Institution (1985-1989) and Vice President of FIOCRUZ (1989-1992). He is Full Member of the National Academy of Medicine of Brazil (May 2005) and Honorary Member of the National Portuguese Academy of Medicine (April 2008) and of the National Academy of Medicine of Argentina (January 2011). He is Doctor Honoris Causa of the University ISALUD of Buenos Aires, Argentina (September 2010) and of the University of Nova Lisboa, Portugal (January 2011). He was President of the Latin American and Caribbean Association of Public Health Education (1998-2000), the International Federation for Cooperation of Health Systems and Services Research Centers (1990-1994) and the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) (2008-2010). He founded (1979) and was the first Executive Secretary of the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (ABRASCO) (1979-1983). Dr. Buss was the Brazilian Representative at the WHO?s Executive Board (2008-2014). He represents Brazil on CPLP (Community of Portuguese Speaker Countries) and UNASUL (Union of South-American Nations) as ?focal point? in the health field. He is Member of the Executive Boards of the International Association of National Institutes of Public Health (IANPHI) (2006-2010) and the Global Forum for Health Research (2008-2011), as well. Between March 2006 and March 2008 he served as Chair of the Brazilian Commission on Social Determinants of Health. He has published more than 200 papers in national and international journals; is the author of six books and of 40 chapters of books; and has made more than 600 main conferences in scientific institutions in Brazil and abroad. The main subjects of his work are: pediatrics, in the early years; and health planning, social determinants of health, health promotion, global health and health diplomacy, currently. He was awarded with several Medals and Honorable Mentions. In 2002 he was granted with the Medical Merit Honor, the highest health award in Brazil, and in 2007 with the Rio Branco Merit Honor by relevant services provided to the Brazilian foreign affairs, both conferred by the President of the Republic of Brazil. He was warded by the World Federation of Public Health Associations with the Leavell Lectureship for his ?outstanding global health leadership? (2006); the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) 2009 International Award; and the Global Health Education Consortium Distinguished Service Award (2010).

Paulo Marchiori Buss, é médico (Universidade Federal de Santa Maria / RS,1972), Mestre em Medicina Social (Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, 1980) e Doutor em Ciências pelo Programa de Saúde Global e Sustentabilidade da Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo (2020). É Professor Emérito da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, título recebido em 07/10/2019.Tem residência médica em Pediatria (1974) e é especialista em Pediatria (Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria, 1975) e em Saúde Pública (Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública, 1975). É pesquisador e professor titular da Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública da Fiocruz, desde 1976. É Membro Titular da Academia Nacional de Medicina do Brasil (2005) e Membro Honorário da Academia Portuguesa de Medicina (2008) e da Academia Nacional de Medicina da Argentina (2011). É Doutor Honoris Causa pela Universidade ISALUD, da Argentina (2010) e pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa, de Portugal (2011). Foi Vice-presidente do Comitê Executivo da Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) (2010-2011), no qual, por indicação do Presidente da República representou o Brasil (2008-2014). Ademais, representou o Brasil nas quinze últimas Assembleias Mundial de Saúde (2005 a 2019) e em diversas reuniões da Conferência Pan-americana de Saúde e do Conselho Diretor da Organização Pan-americana de Saúde (OPAS). Foi Presidente da Fiocruz por dois mandatos (2001-2008) e Diretor da Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública da Fiocruz por duas vezes (1989-1992 e 1998-2000), tendo também sido Vice-Diretor da ENSP (1985-1989) e Vice-Presidente da Fiocruz (1992-1996). Atualmente é diretor do Centro de Relações Internacionais em Saúde da Fiocruz e do Centro Colaborador em Saúde Global e Cooperação Sul-Sul da Organização Pan-americana/Organização Mundial da Saúde (OPAS/OMS). Representou o Brasil no Conselho de Saúde da União de Nações Sul-Americanas (UNASUL) e na Comunidade de Países de Língua Portuguesa (CPLP). Recebeu da Presidência da República a Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Mérito Médico (2010) e a Ordem de Rio Branco (2007), esta por relevantes serviços prestados à política externa brasileira. Autor de seis livros e mais de 200 artigos técnico-científicos publicados em periódicos nacionais e estrangeiros. Proferiu mais de 600 conferências em eventos relevantes nos campos da saúde pública, promoção da saúde, determinantes sociais da saúde, diplomacia da saúde e saúde global.
