Garry Aslanyan
Garry joined the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) in Geneva, in June 2009 and has had several roles. He currently oversees governance and partnership activities, and has developed and manages the ESSENCE on Health Research initiative, a framework for harmonization and alignment for capacity strengthening activities of research funding agencies. Trained in dentistry, public health, and health policy and systems, Garry previously worked at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and Canada Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD). He is an Adjunct Professor in international health and public health at the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto. TDR represents -the best of both worlds to him ? through its link with WHO and its nature as a Special Programme. - I enjoy working in a unit and organization that is enriched by different experiences which complement one another - he says. For instance, I draw on my policy background at DFATD as well as my public health skills to build partnerships with TDR stakeholders who are across the globe.
