Johannes van Leeuwen

At Wageningen?s Agrarian University, The Netherlands, I obtained in 1964 a BSc in Tropical Silviculture and in 1969 a MSc-degree, with MSc-dissertations in Tropical Silviculture, Plant Breeding and Rural Sociology of the Tropics and a specialization in Mathematical Statistics. This broad MSc-program needed special authorization, requiring following the undergraduate disciplines of Plant Breeding and Rural Sociology in the Tropics. Together with other specialized courses, I prepared myself to contribute to the development of low-wage countries. I worked in Mozambique (10 years), Cuba (3 years), Holland (3 years) and Tunisia (1.5 years) in the areas of Silviculture, Genetic Improvement of Tree Species, Experimental Design/ Statistical Analysis and Production Systems of Peasant-Farmers. I participated in international missions on Peasant-Farmers and Sustainable Development to Guinea-Bissau, Zambia, Northeast Brazil, and the Brazilian Amazon. Since December 1988, I am Senior Researcher of the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA), Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, where I coordinate the Agroforestry Unit, which does on-farm Participatory Research with peasant-farmers to find out how to promote Agroforestry. In this context attention is also given to Meliponiculture (keeping of stingless bees), Genetic Improvement of Tree Species, Statistics, and teaching Agroforestry at INPA's graduate courses.

Graduei-me, na Universidade Agrária de Wageningen, Holanda, em 1964, em Silvicultura Tropical. Na mesma universidade concluí um Mestrado pesado e amplo, em 1969, com dissertações em Silvicultura Tropical, Melhoramento de Plantas e Sociologia Rural da Zona Tropical, e uma especialização em Estatística Matemática. Este mestrado amplo precisou de autorização especial, que exigiu a fazer também as matérias de graduação de Melhoramento de Plantas e Sociologia Rural da Zona Tropical. Junto com outros cursos especializados, me preparei assim para contribuir com o desenvolvimento de países de baixa-renda. Trabalhei em Moçambique (10 anos), Cuba (3 anos), Holanda (3 anos) e Tunísia (1,5 ano) nas áreas de Silvicultura, Melhoramento Genético de Espécies Arbóreas, Estatística Experimental e Sistemas de Produção da Agricultura Familiar. Participei de missões sobre Agricultura Familiar e Desenvolvimento Sustentável em Guiné-Bissau, Zâmbia, o Nordeste do Brasil e a Amazônia brasileira. Nessas atividades fui servidor da FAO (Organização das Nações Unidas para Alimentação e Agricultura) ou do Governo da Holanda. Desde 1988, sou Pesquisador Titular III do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), Manaus, Amazonas, Brasil, onde coordeno o Núcleo Agroflorestal, trabalho com Pesquisa Participativa com agricultores, Sistemas Agroflorestais, Melhoramento Genético de Espécies Arbóreas e Estatística Experimental, e ministro aulas sobre Sistemas Agroflorestais para a Pós-Graduação do INPA.
