Norberto Garcia-Cairasco is a Biology Undergraduate from the Science Faculty at the Universidad Del Valle (1976), at Cali Colombia.
He got his Master (1982) and his PhD (1984) degrees in Physiology (Neurophysiology) at the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine at the Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. He did his Post-Doctoral training (1988-1990) at the Neurology Department of the Duke Medical Center at Duke University, North Carolina,USA, under the supervision of James O. McNamara.
In 2011 he was promoted to the Category of Associate Professor (Livre Docente). Since November 2013 was promoted to the Category of Full Professor (MS-6, em R.D.I.D.P), at the Departament of Physiology at the Ribeirão School of Medicine of the UNiversity of São Paulo. He is currently Adviser at the Graduate Programs (PROEX-CAPES) in Physiology and Neurology/Neurosciencie at the same Medical School and is the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Physiology.
He was elected Senior Member of the Neurobiology Commission of the International League Against Epilepsy (2013-2017) and is Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal Epilepsy & Behavior, acting as Guest-Editor of the Supplement "International Symposium NEWroscience 2008. Contemporary Neuroscience, Epilepsy and the Arts (published in 2009; 11 Articles)) and of the Special Issue "International Symposium NEWroscience 2013. Epilepsies: Complexity and Comorbidities" (published in 2014; 23 Articles).
He has experience in the Area of Physiology,with emphasis in Neurophysiology, acting mainly and in an integrated manner in the following themes: Behavioral (Quantitative Neuroethology), Eletrophysiological, Cellular and Molecular Characterization of Alterations of the Motor Control, among them the Epilepsies (Basic and Clinic), Experimental models of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders and of Parkinson Disease.
In addition, he studies Plasticity of the Auditory System and Sensory-Motor and Sensory-Limbic Integration. The above research lines have evolved to Studies of Systems Complexity in the Neuroscience, thanks to collaborative Projects in Computational Neuroscience.
He also coordinates and executes activities in the Neuroscience & Arts interface and is a Member, invited by the Brazilian Society for Neuroscience and Behavior (SBNeC) of the National Commission of the "Semana Nacional do Cérebro" the brazilian counterpart of the Worldwide known "Brain Awareness Week" (Semana Mundial do Cérebro), which internationally is supported by the Dana Foundation for Brain Initiatives, the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) and the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO). NGC is a Member of both SfN and IBRO.
Possui Graduação em Biologia - Universidad Del Valle, Colômbia (1976), Mestrado em Fisiologia pela Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto (1982) e Doutorado em Fisiologia pela Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto (1984) da Universidade de São Paulo. Pós-Doutorado no Duke University Medical Center (1988-1990) . Ao realizar o Concurso de Livre Docência obteve em 2011 o título de Professor Associado. Desde novembro de 2013 ao realizar Concurso Público obteve a vaga de Professor Titular, Referência MS-6, em R.D.I.D.P. junto ao Departamento de Fisiologia da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da UDSP. É Orientador nos Programas PROEX-CAPES 7.0 em Fisiologia e em Neurologia/Neurociências da FMRP. Foi recentemente Coordenador do Programa de Pós-Graduação de Fisiologia da FMRP-USP no Quadriênio 2013-2016.
Foi Membro Senior eleito da Neurobiology Commission of the International League Against Epilepsy entre 2013 e 2017. É Membro do Editorial Board da Revista Epilepsy & Behavior, tendo atuado como Guest-Editor do Supplement "International Symposium NEWroscience 2008. Contemporary Neuroscience, Epilepsy and the Arts, publicado em 2009 com 11 Artigos, do Special Issue "International Symposium NEWroscience 2013. Epilepsies: Complexity and Comorbidities", publicado em 2014 com 23 Articles e do Special Issue "Genetic and Reflex Epilepsies, Audiogenic Seizures and Strains: From Experimental Models to the Clinic", publicado em 2017 com 16 artigos.
Tem experiência na área de Fisiologia, com ênfase em Neurofisiologia, atuando principalmente e de maneira integrada nos seguintes temas: Avaliação Comportamental (Neuroetologia Quantitativa), Eletrofisiológica e Molecular de Alterações do Controle Motor entre elas: Epilepsia (Experimental e Clínica), Transtorno Obsessivo Compulsivo e Parkinson. Além desses tópicos de pesquisa, estuda Plasticidade no Sistema Auditivo, Integração Sensório-Motora e Sensório-Límbica. A atividade de Pesquisa acima mencionada tem evoluído para estudos de Sistemas Complexos em Neurociências graças a projetos colaborativos em Neurociência Computacional. É Membro da Sociedade Brasileira de Fisiologia (SBFis), da Sociedade Brasileira de Neurociências e Comportamento (SBNeC) e da Liga Brasileira de Epilepsia (LBE). Coordena e realiza atividades na interface Neurociência e Artes, sendo Membro da Comissão da Semana Nacional do Cérebro (SNC), junto à SBNeC, com destaque para atividades no Instituto de Estudos Avançados da USP-RP, no Instituto de Neurociências e Comportamento (INeC) e da Rede "Ciência, Artes, Educação e Sociedade" (coordenada por NGC no IEA) com seu evento máximo: "S.O.S: O Cérebro na Praça". Estas atividades, de cunho mundial, correspondem à Brain Awareness Week (Semana Mundial do Cérebro) e tem o patrocínio da Dana Foundation for Brain Initiatives e de duas das maiores Sociedades Científicas Internacionais em Neurociências das quais NGC é Membro, a Society for Neuroscience (SFN) e a International Brain Research Organization (IBRO). Além disto, NGC é também membro da American Epilepsy Society (AES).
