Eduardo Sérgio Valério Borges da Fonseca

Possui graduação em Medicina pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (1993), Título de Especialista em Ginecologia e Obstetrícia pela Federação Brasileira das Associações de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia (FEBRASGO) e Habilitação em Medicina fetal pela Fetal Medicine Foundation (Diploma in Fetal Medicine) e pela FEBRASGO. Realizou mestrado em Medicina (Obstetrícia e Ginecologia) em 1998, Doutorado em Medicina (Obstetrícia e Ginecologia) em 2001 pela Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP). É Livre-docente da Disciplina de Obstetrícia da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (2013) por concurso público. Atualmente é Professor Adjunto do Departamento de Obstetrícia e Ginecologia, do Centro de Ciências Médicas, da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB) e Vice-Presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Ultrassonografia (SBUS). Tem experiência clínica na área de Medicina, com ênfase em Obstetrícia (Gestação de alto risco e Medicina Fetal), com linha de pesquisa nos seguintes temas: prevenção de parto prematuro, pré-natal de alto risco, rastreamento e diagnósticos de alterações fetais. Adicionalmente, é um dos fundadores do Instituto Primeiro Olhar, organização sem fins lucrativos cujo objetivo é acolher e dar suporte emocional às famílias com gestantes e/ou crianças que nasceram com Síndrome de Down (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn2CXjZTMMquYvNTdPgi6cw).

Received medical training at the Federal University of Paraiba in Brazil and became a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology registered with the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetricians in 1998. Subsequently received Masters and PhD degrees from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil focusing his research on the causes of prematurity. Dr. Fonseca furthered his research interests with a fellowship at the King?s College Hospital in London working with Professor Nicolaides on the relationship and treatment of cervical length to premature birth. Dr. Fonseca has published several papers on the relationship of preterm birth to cervical length and in 2003 was the lead author of one of the two key papers regarding the use of progesterone in the prevention of preterm birth. The most important research was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007, in which nearly 25 thousand pregnant women were screening for preterm birth and those found with a short cervical length took vaginal progesterone. He is currently Vice-President of the Brazilian Society of Ultrasound and Professor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Federal University of Paraiba in Brazil. His research interests include prevention of preterm birth and screening of fetal abnormalities.
