Eliane Volchan

Graduated in Medicine (1976) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Masters in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) (1980) from UFRJ and Ph.D. in Sciences (1986) from UFRJ. Postdoctoral fellow at Rockefeller University (New York, USA). She is Full Professor at UFRJ, Head of the Laboratory of Neurobiology at the Carlos Chagas Filho Biophysics Institute (UFRJ), member of the Integrated Laboratory for Research on Stress at the Institute of Psychiatry (UFRJ) and associate member of the NIMH Center for the Study of Emotion and Attention (Gainesville, USA). He has experience in the field of Neuroscience, working mainly on the subject of Neurobiology of Human Emotion. She carried out pioneering studies on the physiology of defensive reactions, providing a basic-clinical approach in the investigation of these reactions in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder. She coordinated work that showed for the first time in the laboratory, biological markers of tonic immobility; an involuntary peri-traumatic reaction to extreme threats, which is associated with the severity of this disorder. She established since 2005 scientific interaction with the Psychophysiology Laboratory of the University of Granada (UGR, Spain) with International Cooperation projects selected in CAPES/DGPU that contributed to the Scientific Cooperation Agreement between UFRJ and UGR in 2019. She worked with the National Cancer Institute and Ministry of Health in unprecedented work with great national impact related to the development and testing of the emotional impact of health warnings for tobacco control between 2006-2013. She coordinates a line of research focused on the neurobiological and behavioral substrates of prosocial motivation and the sequelae of loneliness. She supervised 22 Master's dissertations and 20 Doctoral theses. Most of former students presently work in public institutions where they created new research centers at UFF, UFOP, UFRJ, UERJ and UFPa. He is a Scientist of Our State by FAPERJ. She received the Honor Neuroscience Medal Brazil 2018, by the Brazilian Society of Neurosciences and Behavior (SBNEC), in recognition of the contributions to neurosciences in the country. She received the National Order of Scientific Merit, by the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil in 2005. She was coordinator of the Ad hoc International Outreach Committee (Latin America) of the Society for Psychophysiological Research (SPR) from 2004 to 2013. Since 2004 she has participated in meetings, organized symposia and given lectures on the topic of Women and Science. She served in the working group for the Women in World Neuroscience Committee (WWN) of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) and was a member from 2008 to 2015. She participated in the construction of the Brazil Chapter of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) in 2020 and is part of the Board (Vice-President); and in the construction of the SBNEC Diversity Committee (2020), of which she is a member.

Possui graduação em Medicina (1976) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), mestrado em Ciências Biológicas (Biofísica) (1980) pela UFRJ e doutorado em Ciências (1986) pela UFRJ. Realizou pós-doutorado na Rockefeller University (Nova York, EUA). É Professora Titular da UFRJ, Chefe do Laboratório de Neurobiologia do Instituto de Biofísica Carlos Chagas Filho (UFRJ), membra do Laboratório Integrado de Pesquisa do Estresse do Instituto de Psiquiatria (UFRJ) e membra associada do NIMH Center for the Study of Emotion and Attention (Gainesville, EUA). É Pesquisadora 1B do CNPq. Tem experiência na área de Neurociências, atuando principalmente no tema da Neurobiologia da Emoção Humana. Realizou estudos pioneiros da fisiologia de reações defensivas ensejando parceria básico-clínica na investigação destas reações em pacientes com transtorno de estresse pós-traumático. Coordenou trabalho que evidenciou pela primeira vez em laboratório, marcadores biológicos da imobilidade tônica; reação peri-traumática involuntária frente a ameaças extremas que está associada à gravidade deste transtorno. Estabeleceu desde 2005 interação científica com o Laboratório de Psicofisiologia da Universidade de Granada (UGR, Espanha) com projetos de Cooperação Internacional selecionados em editais CAPES/DGPU que contribuíram para firmar Acordo de Cooperação Científica entre a UFRJ e a UGR em 2019. Contribuiu com o Instituto Nacional de Câncer e Ministério da Saúde em trabalho inédito e de grande impacto nacional relacionado à elaboração e testes do impacto emocional de advertências sanitárias para controle do tabaco entre 2006-2013. Coordena linha de pesquisa voltada para os substratos neurobiológicos e comportamentais da motivação pró-social e as sequelas da solidão. Orientou 22 dissertações de Mestrado e 20 teses de Doutorado. A maioria dos egressos atua em Instituições públicas onde criaram novos núcleos de pesquisa na UFF, UFOP, UFRJ, UERJ e UFPa. É Cientista do Nosso Estado pela FAPERJ. Recebeu a honraria Medalha Neurociências Brasil 2018 da Sociedade Brasileira de Neurociências e Comportamento (SBNEC), em reconhecimento ao conjunto de contribuições às neurociências em nosso País. Em 2021 recebeu a Homenagem por relevantes contribuições científicas e acadêmicas a neurociências, a neuropsicologia, a estudos do comportamento e áreas afins do Instituto Brasileiro de Neuropsicologia e Comportamento (IBNeC) . É membra Associada da Academia Brasileira de Ciências (ABC) e Comendadora da Ordem do Mérito Científico pela Presidência da Republica. Foi coordenadora do Ad hoc International Outreach Committee (Latin America) da Society for Psychophysiological Research (SPR) de 2004 a 2013. Foi eleita para o Conselho da Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC) em 2023. Desde 2004 tem participado de reuniões, organizado simpósios e proferido palestras no tema Mulher e Ciência. Atuou grupo de trabalho para o Comitê Women in World Neuroscience (WWN) da International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) e foi membra de 2008 a 2015. Participou da construção do Capítulo Brasil da Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) em 2020 e faz parte da Diretoria (Vice-Presidenta); e na construção do Comitê de Diversidade da SBNEC (2020), do qual é membra.
