After graduating at the Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas (FOP-UNICAMP) in 1994, I received my master (1996) and PhD (1999) in Oral Biology and Pathology from the same institution. I became an associated professor in 2006 and currently I am professor in Pathology of the Department of Oral Diagnosis, FOP-UNICAMP. I spent one year as research fellow (sandwich fellowship) in the University of Maryland Dental School (1998-1999), where I have conducted a series of experiments to understand the cellular and molecular events related to the gingival overgrowth in hereditary gingival fibromatosis, and other two years (postdoctoral fellow) working with Professor Heide L. Ford in the School of Medicine, University of Colorado Denver (2002-2004), exploring the involvement of the SIX1 homeobox gene in the development and tumorigenesis of the mammary glands. In 2022, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Helsinki awarded me with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from for my international contribution on oral cancer. I am Specialty Chief Editor of section ?Oral Cancer? in Frontiers in Oral Health, associate editor of Oral Diseases and Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine, and reviewing editorial board member of the Medicina Oral, Patologia Oral y Cirugia Bucal, Dentistry Journal, and Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry. At FOP-UNICAMP, I was head of the Department of Oral Diagnosis, coordinator of the Graduate Program in Estomatopatologia, and vice coordinator of the Graduate Programs. I am currently member of the Internal Commission of Biosafety in Genetically Modified Organisms (CIBio-FOP) and PI of the molecular biology laboratory of FOP-UNICAMP. Member of the Area Panel in Health Sciences (Dentistry) at FAPESP.
Cirurgião-dentista (1994), mestre (1996), doutor (1999) e livre docente (2006) pela Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba da Universidade Estadual de Campinas-FOP-UNICAMP. Desde 2017 é professor titular de Patologia do Departamento de Diagnóstico Oral da FOP-UNICAMP. Realizou estágio de doutorado sanduíche na University of Maryland Dental School (1998-1999), onde explorou os eventos celulares e moleculares associados aos aumentos gengivais na fibromatose gengival hereditária, e de pós-doutorado na School of Medicine, University of Colorado Denver (2002-2004), quando avaliou o papel do gene homeobox SIX1 no desenvolvimento e tumorigênese das glândulas mamárias. Em 2022 recebeu o título de Doutor Honoris Causa pela Faculty of Medicine of the University of Helsinki pela sua contribuição internacional na área do câncer oral. É Editor da sessão Cânceres Orais da revista Frontiers in Oral Health, Editor Associado das revistas Oral Diseases e Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine, e membro do Editoral Board das revistas Medicina Oral, Patologia Oral y Cirugia Bucal, Dentistry Journal e Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry, e revisor para diversas revistas especializadas e agências de fomento. Foi chefe do Departamento de Diagnóstico Oral da FOP-UNICAMP em duas oportunidades (2000-2002 e 2013-2015), coordenador do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estomatopatologia da FOP-UNICAMP (2008-2012) e vice coordenador dos Cursos de Pós-Graduação da FOP-UNICAMP (2010-2012). Atualmente é membro da Comissão Interna de Biossegurança da FOP-UNICAMP (CIBio-FOP) e coordenador do Laboratório de Biologia Molecular da FOP-UNICAMP. É coordenador da Área de Saúde II (Odontologia) da FAPESP.
