Barbara Papadopoulou

Dr. Barbara Papadopoulou, B. Pharm., Ph.D., is a full professor in the Department of microbiology-infectious diseases and immunology of the Faculty of medicine at Université Laval. She received her Ph.D. degree in microbiology and molecular biology from the University of Paris XI and Pasteur Institute of Paris in France. For her postdoctoral studies, she was trained in yeast genetics at the University of Amsterdam and on Leishmania molecular biology and drug resistance at Laval University. Dr. Papadopoulou is a world expert on Leishmania parasitic diseases and her research focus is on gene regulation, microbial pathogenesis, functional genomics and vaccinology. She is the author of more than 120 peer-reviewed publications, and several book chapters, and more than 250 communications in international meetings and symposia. Dr. Papadopoulou is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and has received several other prestigious national and international awards for excellence in research, including a Medical Research Council Scholar Award and the New Investigator Award in Molecular Parasitology from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund for her outstanding and original contributions in the field of parasitic diseases. She is currently the Director of the Division of Infectious Disease and Immunology of the CHU de Quebec Research Center and a member of several provincial and national strategic initiatives on host-parasite interactions (FQRNT) and international consortiums (WorldLeish and TriTrypDB, a functional genomic resource for the Trypanosomatidae). She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Fonds de Recherche du Québec-Santé (FRQS) and the FRQS Governing Council.
