Aloir Antonio Merlo is a full professor at Institute of Chemistry, UFRGS, Brazil. Undergraduated from UNIJUI, RS in 1987 and graduated from UFSC, SC in 1993 under supervision of Professor Hugo Gallardo. Post-doctorate in 2012 at the University of Hull under the supervision of Professor Stephen M. Kelly. Teaching activities are also present in his carrier ? from 1983 to 1994 he worked in public and private schools. Since 1995, he has been working at Chemistry Institute in teaching and researching. He received in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007 (2), 2008, 2010 and 2014 Teaching Awards for his dedication in Teaching organic chemistry classes. Prof Merlo is the author or coauthor over 60 scientific papers, reviews and he is the author of book ?Reações Pericíclicas. Uma Sinfonia de Moléculas e Elétrons. 2012, 528 pp, (ed. UFRGS) ISBN-10: 8538601644; ISBN-13: 978-8538601647. His currently research is in liquid crystals (LCs) with special emphasis on synthesis of 5-membered isoxazoline and isoxazole by cycloaddition [3+2] 1,3-dipolar/oxidation process, which has been extensively studied since 2005. Isoxazolines and isoxazoles are excellent template to synthetize and to study liquid crystal materials from classic to polar mesophases, such as calamitic, columnar hexagonal, polar smectic mesophases and banana mesophases. His research is focused on design, synthesis and characterization of liquid crystals molecules. Currently our laboratory is working with the synthesis of: i) Polar- and bulky-terminated isoxazoline and isoxazol liquid crystals (ILCs). ii) Synthesis of polar ?banana? smectic materials. iii. Diels-Alder (DA) reaction to synthetize bulky-terminated ILCs. iv) [3,3]-Sigmatropic rearrangement (Claisen rearrangement) of arylallyl ethers to render new cycloadducts, to be explore in responsive liquid crystal materials. External collaborations are fundamental to our success in the arena of liquid crystals. Many thanks to the groups of national and international collaborators and our agencies for grant ? CNPq, CAPES, FAPERGS and my institution UFRGS. In his spare time Aloir is involved in Bonsai art. Art contest ILCC. https://www.ilcsoc.org/art-contest/gallery/2019/#october, https://www.ilcsoc.org/art-contest/gallery/2018/#may. Visibility: https://www.ilcsoc.org/research-groups/south-america/
