Born in Balneário Camboriú, SC, he holds a degree in Chemistry (UFSC, 1988), a PhD in Chemical Sciences (UNICAMP, 1993) and a Post-Doctorate (Harvard University/USA, 1994-1995). He is a Full Professor at IQ/Unicamp where he has been teaching since 06/1992 and Researcher 1A at CNPq. He works in the area of synthesis of bioactive compounds and medicinal chemistry. His group completed the total synthesis of several structurally complex bioactive molecules. He currently has collaborations with MMV (www.mmv.org) and DNDi (www.dndi.org) developing clinical candidates for the treatment of tropical parasitic diseases. He has 119 publications; one book chapter and 1 patent granted by INPI; delivered 311 conferences in Brazil and abroad, including several opening conferences for scientific events; 618 participations in columns and texts for newspapers and interviews for TV/Radio/Newspapers/Magazines. He has seven publications highlighted as COVERS of journals: RSC Med. Chem. (2020), J.Chem. info Model. (2020), J. Med. Chem. (2014), Eur. J. Org. Chem. (2009), Kim. Nova (2009), Chem. Soc. Rev. (2008) and Synthesis (2003), one publication as a VIP article in Chemistry - A European Journal (2011) and two featured publications on the ACS website, celebrating Organic Chemistry in France and Latin America.He supervised 26 Master's students, 19 Doctoral students, 28 Scientific Initiation students and supervised 29 post-docs and 3 interns. He was General Secretary of the 8th BMOS (1996-1998). At SBQ, he was General Secretary for two terms (2000-2004), President of the Organizing Committee of four annual meetings, Editor of the Electronic Bulletin (2000-2006), Member of the Advisory Board (2006-2008) and Editor of the Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society (2005-2013). He was a member of the Organizing and Scientific Committees of several international events, member of the Chemistry Advisory Committee of CNPq (2007-2010), member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Chem. Soc. Rev. and Org. Biomol. Chem. (RSC), Chem. Eng. News (ACS), Assistant Coordinator (2008-2011) and Coordinator of the Chemistry Area at CAPES (2011-2014). He is a member of the Editorial Board of Revista Virtual de Química (RVQ), member of the INCT-INOFAR Management Committee, Coordinator of the Pint of Science Campinas Festival, Columnist for the Unicamp Journal, Member of the Scientific Committee of the SOU_CIÊNCIA Movement and Member of the Task Force Unicamp in the fight against COVID-19.He received awards and honors, notably: in 1999, Medal Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society (JBCS); in 2009, Zeferino Vaz Academic Recognition Award (Unicamp); in 2013, CAPES Award for Theses in the Chemistry Area; in 2014, Walter Borzani Award (CRQ IV Region); in 2014, the Santander Universities Science and Innovation Award in the Health Area; in 2015, the Simão Mathias Medal (SBQ); in 2015 he was the Brazilian honored in the initiative "175 Faces of Chemistry" (http://www.rsc.org/diversity/175-faces/) in the 175th anniversary of the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2016, he received the recognition award "DNDi Latin America Partnership of the Year 2016" to the LOLA Consortium; in 2021, the Oswaldo Luiz Alves Award (SBQ), for the prominence in the defense of science, in the diffusion and dissemination of scientific knowledge for the benefit of Brazilian society; in 2022, the Adunicamp Prof. Mohamed Habib Prize, in the Defense of life, physical and mental health category; and tribute from Rádio Antena 8 FM from Caraguatatuba for the partnership in the fight against fake news in the pandemic. He is a Member of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo (ACIESP, 2008), Commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit (President of the Republic, 2010), Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC, 2011), Fellow of IUPAC (2014) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2014). É Professor Titular do IQ/Unicamp onde atua como Docente desde 06/1992 e Pesquisador 1A do CNPq. Atua na área de síntese orgânica e química medicinal. Seu grupo concluiu a síntese total de várias moléculas bioativas complexas do ponto de vista estrutural. Tem colaborações com a MMV (www.mmv.org) e com a DNDi (www.dndi.org) desenvolvendo candidatos pré-clínicos para o tratamento de doenças parasitárias tropicais. Tem 122 publicações; 2 capítulos de livros e 2 patentes, sendo uma concedida pelo INPI; ministrou 333 conferências no país e no exterior, incluindo várias conferências de abertura de eventos científicos; tem 656 participações em colunas e textos para jornais e entrevistas para TV/Rádio/Jornais/Revistas. Tem sete publicações em destaque como CAPA dos periódicos: RSC Med. Chem. (2020), J. Chem. Inf. Model. (2020), J. Med. Chem. (2014), Eur. J. Org. Chem. (2009), Quim. Nova (2009), Chem. Soc. Rev. (2008) e Synthesis (2003), uma publicação como VIP article no Chemistry - A European Journal (2011) e duas publicações em destaque no site da ACS, celebrando a Química Orgânica na França e na América Latina. Orientou 26 alunos de Mestrado, 19 de Doutorado, 29 de Iniciação Científica e supervisionou 34 pós-doutorados e 3 estagiários. Foi Secretário Geral do 8th BMOS (1996-1998). Na SBQ, foi Secretário Geral em dois mandatos (2000-2004), Presidente da Comissão Organizadora de quatro reuniões anuais, Editor do Boletim Eletrônico (2000-2006), Membro do Conselho Consultivo (2006-2008) e Editor do Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society (2005-2013).
