Iván Mauricio Burbano Aldana

I did my undergraduate degree in physics in the Universidad de los Andes. I am currently a graduate assistant and master's student in the same university. In February I will begin a double master's program between ICTP-SAIFR/IFT-UNESP and Perimeter. My research interests are based around using powerful mathematical tools to explore the structure of a quantum theory of gravity. To this end, I've become interested in the thermal time hypothesis and the possible physical interpretations of the canonical one parameter group of outer automorphisms von Neumann algebras come equipped with. As a result, I am currently in preparation of my first research paper along with A.P. Balachandran, A.F. Reyes-Lega and S. Tabban. In it we study an ambiguity arising when one tries to calculate the entropy of an algebraic state through the GNS construction. By tracing it back to the action of the commutant to the algebra of observables, we interpret it as an emerging gauge symmetry. By implementing it through a quantum operation we open up the possibility of studying through simultations. Moreover, during my time in the IFT I will begin exploring string theory, another powerful approach to the problem.
