Haakon Fossen

I have my Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Bergen (1983, 1986), and a PhD in geology from University of Minnesota (1992), and main employments with Statoil (1986-1996) and the University of Bergen, Norway (2006-present). My field of specialization and research is structural geology and tectonics applied to any scale, from microstructures to the scale of rifts and orogens. Founded in more than 120 scientific publications, my research involves theoretical structural geology, transpression/tension, kinematic studies and shear zones, orogenic collapse, rift formation and evolution, salt tectonics and deformation of porous sandstones. FIeld areas include the Scandinavian Caledonides, the North Sea rift, Colorado Plateau/Basin and Range, Suez rift, and more recently the Tucano Rift and parts of the Brasiliano system. In addition to research, I am the author of the text book Structural Geology (Cambridge Univ. Press) and several other books and book chapters, and produced a large amount of teaching material, including 20 e-learning modules designed as a resource for my book and for students of structural geology in general.
