Dr. Oliveira earned his M.D. (1985), M.Sc. (1989), and Sc.D. (2004) from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. He is currently Associate Professor at the UFRGS School of Medicine, Head of the Respiratory Endoscopy Unit at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) and Coordinator of the HCPA Innovation Center, and Head of the Minimally Invasive Emphysema Treatment Center at Hospital Moinhos de Vento, Porto Alegre, where he pioneered the use of one-way endobronchial valve therapy in Brazil. Dr. Oliveira has also been a board-certified intensivist (Associação de Medicina Intensiva Brasileira, AMIB) and respiratory endoscopist (Sociedade Brasileira de Endoscopia Peroral, SBEPO) since 1993 and 1987, respectively. His special interests include teaching interventional bronchoscopy, developing stents for the management of central airway obstruction, endoscopic treatment of emphysema with endobronchial valves, and mesenchymal stromal cell therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
