Graduada em Oceanologia pela Fundação Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (1985), mestrado (1991) e doutorado em Oceanografia Biológica - Especialização Ecologia - Dalhousie University (1998). Atua membro do Grupo de Especialistas em Aves e Mamíferos Marinhos do Scientific Committee For Antarctic Research (SCAR-EGBAMM. Foi responsável pelo componente brasileiro do projeto ?Mamíferos Marinhos como Plataforma de Monitoramento Ambiental de Pólo a Polo (MEOP-API)?. Coordenadora do modulo ?Tempo de residência de organismos pelágicos em Áreas de Significância Ecológica (ASE - Hot spots)? do INCT Centro de Oceanografia Integrada (INCT Mar COI) e co-investigadora na iniciativa de implantação Rede de Rastreamento Acústico de Animais Marinhos (Ocean Tracking Network - ONT-Brazil). Tem experiência na área de Ecologia, com ênfase em Ecologia Aplicada, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Bioecologia de Mamíferos Marinhos do RS e Antártica, estuda elefantes-marinhos-do-sul (Mirounga leonina), conservação e manejo de Mamíferos Aquáticos, Mamíferos Marinhos como Plataforma de Monitoramento Ambiental, e Ecologia de Ecossistemas Antárticos. É autora principal (LA) do capitulo sobre Regiões Polares (Ch03) do Relatório Especial do IPCC para Oceanos e Atmosfera (SROCC-Ch 03: Polar Regions).

Member of the Steering Commiitte of the ?Expert Group on Birds and Marine Mammals? of the Scientific Committee For Antarctic Research (SCAR-EGBAMM), a member of the Special Working Group on Marine Mammals (GTEMA) of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources. Founding member of the Latin American Society of Specialists in Aquatic Mammals (SOLAMAC), member of the AGU (American Geophisical Union) and AOCEANO (Brazilian Association of Oceanography). Lead Scientist of the Brazilian branch of the Projetc Marine Mammal Exploring the Oceans Pole to Pole (MEOP-API). Principal Investigator in the module "Residence Time of Pelagic Organisms in Areas of Ecological Significance (AES - Hot spots)" as part of the project ?Integrated Oceanography: Multiple Uses of the Continental Shelf and Adjacent Ocean? an iniciative of the Integrated Oceanography Centre (INCT- Mar COI) and co-investigator on the initiative of deploying a Brazilian network of Acoustic Tracking of Marine Animals (Ocean Tracking Network - ONT-Brazil). Member of the Awards Committee of the Society For Marine Mammalogy (SMM / USA). Expertise in Ecology, with emphasis in Applied Ecology, particularly: Bioecology of Marine Mammals of Antarctica and RS state, Mirounga leonina (southern elephant seal), Conservation and Management of Aquatic Mammals, Antarctic Ecosystems Ecology.Is a Lead author of Chapter 3 - Polar Regions of the Special Report on the Oceans and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-SROCC).
