Dr. Karine de Souza Silva is a Professor of International Law and International Relations at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Brazil. A recipient of the Productivity in Research Grant through the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (PQ CNPq). She has lectured as a visiting professor at the Technical University of Mozambique, University of Middlebury (USA), University of Minho in Portugal, the Universidad de Valladolid, University of Bruxelles; etc.
She is coordinator of Eirene Center of Postcolonial and Decolonial Research and Practice applied to International Relations and International Law ? and of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair for Migration and Refuge outreach program that is jointly developed with the Center of Assistance for Immigrants and Refugees (CRAI-SC).
- She holds a Ph.D. in International Law /Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.
- She was Visiting scholar at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. - Visiting scholar at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium - scholarship from the Coimbra Group. - Visiting scholar at the Universidad de Sevilla in Spain - scholarship from the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES);
- Ad hoc consultant for the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Ministry of Education (MEC), the CAPES, and Ad hoc Consultant for the European Union. She also participated as an observer of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH)
- She has published hundreds of articles, books and chapters books on: Systemic Global Racism and International Law and International Relations; Post-colonial and Decolonial epistemologies applied to International Relations and International Law; African Diaspora, migrations and refuges;
She coordinates the extension project ?Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair for Immigration and Refuges? . It has already assisted around 30.000 immigrants and refugees from 62 countries, in partnership with the Congregation of the Missionaries Scalabrinians. She coordinates investigations on ?hyper-vulnerabilization and social exclusion of non-white immigrants and refugees from the south-south?/ on ?imigrations and the continued subalternization of black peoples; and on Brazilian difficulties in implementing the norms derived from the International Decade of Afro-descendants established by the United Nations Organization?.
In 2017, she was honored by the Municipal Legislature of Florianopolis with the Zumbi de Palmares Medal. The Zumbi de Palmares Medal is part of the activities of the Week of Black Consciousness and is aimed at honoring people that perform effective acts that ?combat any type of discrimination and prejudice, defend the fundamental principles of the Brazilian Constitution.? She received this award because of the importance of the EIRENÈ? Center of Support for Immigrants and Refugees outreach program for the reception and integration of migrants and refugees in Florianopolis, of her research about African topics.
In 2011, Professor Karine Silva was named the 2011 Featured Black Man and Black Woman Medal from the Municipal Legislature of Florianopolis.
She hold the Jean Monnet Chair, officially awarded by the European Union. She is professor of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair for Migration and Refuge, awarded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Atuou como assessora do Gabinete de Transição do Governo Lula, na Pasta de Relações Exteriores. É coordenadora do "Améfrica-EIRENE - Centro de Pesquisas e práticas Decoloniais aplicadas às Relações Internacionais e ao Direito Internacional", e do projeto de extensão "Núcleo de Acolhimento a pessoas Imigrantes e Refugiadas".
É membro da Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores Negras e Negros/ABPN. É professora da Cátedra Sérgio Vieira de Mello da Agência das Nações Unidas para Refugiados.
Tem experiência na área de Epistemologias críticas Decoloniais e afro-diapóricas aplicadas ao Direito Internacional e às Relações Internacionais, com ênfase em: 1) Direito Internacional e Relações Raciais; 2) Raça, branquitude e a de(s)colonização das Relações Internacionais; 3) Diáspora africana, migrações e refúgios.
