Graduado em Engenharia Florestal pela Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (1989), mestrado em Ciências Florestais pela Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz/USP de São Paulo (1992) e doutorado em Ecologia e Nutrição Florestal pela Universitaet fuer Bodenkultur em Viena na Austria (1995). Atualmente é professor Titular do Departamento de Ciências Florestais da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Professor de graduação do curso de Engenharia Florestal e de pós-graduação no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia Florestal. Coordenador do Laboratório de Ecologia Florestal do Departamento de Ciências Florestais da UFSM. Coordenador de projetos de pesquisa nas áreas de Ecologia e Nutrição Florestal. Consultor dos periódicos Biomass and Bioenergy, Forest Ecology and Management, Forest Ecology and Nutrition, Ciência Florestal, Floresta, Ciência Florestal. Editor chefe da revista Scientia Florestais do IPEF. Atual Líder Científico do programa cooperativo sobre Pesquisa do Pinus no Brasil (PPPIB), junto ao Instituto de Pesquisas e Estudos Florestais (IPEF). Representante da área de Pesquisa Florestal, junto ao conselho Deliberativo do IPEF. Líder do grupo de pesquisa do CNPq: Ciclagem de Nutrientes em Florestas Nativas e plantações comerciais. Coordenador da Divisão 1.02.01 - Ecology and Silviculture of Plantation Forests in the Tropics da International Union of Forest Research Organization (IUFRO). Tem experiência na área de Recursos Florestais e Engenharia Florestal, com ênfase em Ecologia e Nutrição Florestal, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Ecologia Florestal, Biomassa, Solos florestais,Nutrição florestal, Eucaliptocultura, Acacia mearnsii, Pinus, Ciclagem de nutrientes e sustentabilidade.
