Possui graduação em Matemática pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1967), Mestrado em Matemática pelo Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) (1972), Doutorado em Matemática pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro e Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (1981) e Livre Docência (1999) pela Universidade de São Paulo/SP. Foi Professora titular da Pontifícia Univ. Católica do RJ (Depto. de Matemática), da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Departamento de Economia) e da Universidade de São Paulo-SP (Departamento de Economia). Foi Pesquisador Visitante da Univ. of Pittsburgh (Est. Unidos), Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (França), Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (Espanha), Ecole Polytechnique (França), Univ. of California, Berkeley (Est. Unidos) e Brown University (Estados Unidos). Atualmente é Professora Titular da Escola de Pós-graduação de Economia da FGV-RJ e Professora Titular aposentada da USP e da UFRJ. É Fellow da J. S. Guggenheim Foundation, Fellow da Econometric Society, Fellow da Game Theory Society e Economic Theory Fellow. Recebeu os prêmios: TWAS 2016 (THE WORLD ACADEMY OF SCIENCES) , Lanchester Prize 1990 (Mathematical of Operation Research), Haralambos Simeonides 2001(ANPEC), Mario Henrique Simonsen 2006 (RBE/FGV), Adriano Romariz Duarte 1996 (SBE), Medalha de Honra ao Mérito 2013 (Ordem dos Economistas do Brasil). É membro titular da American Academy of Arts and Sciences e da Academia Brasileira de Ciências. Foi Editora Associada da Econometrica e da International Journal of Game Theory. Foi membro do Conselho da Game Theory Society e duas vezes, membro do Conselho da Econometric Society. Foi membro do Nominating Committe for offices e do Nominating Committee for fellows da Econometric Society. É membro fundador da Game Theory Society. Foi presidente do Latin America Stand Committee da Econometric Society. Trabalhou como membro do Comitê de Programa do World Congress of the Econometric Society em 1990 (Barcelona) e 2000 (Seatle); 3rd World Congress on Game Theory - 2008, Northwestern University, do 4th World Congress on Game Theory - 2012, Istambul e vários encontros Latino Americanos da Econ. Society. Escreveu o livro ?Two-sided Matching. A study in game-theoretic modeling and analysis? em co-autoria com Alvin Roth, um dos ganhadores do prêmio Nobel em Economia de 2012. Este livro recebeu o prêmio ?Lanchester? de 1990 e em 2010 foi organizado o congresso ?Roth and Sotomayor: Twenty years after? na Duke University, North Caroline, para celebrar os 20 anos de publicação do livro. Tem experiência na área de Economia Matemática, com ênfase em Teoria dos Jogos, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Mercados de matching de dois lados, Desenho de Mercados, jogos cooperativos.

Nowadays, she is Professor of Getulio Vargas Foundation - RJ. She is Fellow of the J. S. Guggenheim Foundation, Fellow of the Econometric Society, Fellow of the Game Theory Society and EconomicTheory Fellow.
