Profa. Dra Esther Império Hamburger

Professor of History and Theory of Cinema and Television at the Department of Film, Radio and Television of the School of Communication Arts at the University of São Paulo (USP). With a background in social anthropology (Ph.D., University of Chicago, 1999), Professor Hamburger has published in a wide range of journals and book anthologies, including the journals Framework and Television and New Media in the U.S., and Folha de São Paulo newspaper. She published O Brasil atenado, a study of the Brazilian telenovela. On the television front recent work deals with telenovela?s interpretations of Brazil. Research-in-progress includes expressions of violence, race, and poverty, in contemporary Brazilian film, with an approach that encompasses aesthetic forms, modes of exhibition, and viewer response. This work analyses the ways in which films have come to play a strategic role in the poetic and political expression of the Brazilian social inequality. It does so by tracing interlocutions between certain films, which capture and express different perspectives. Ongoing research on film director Arne Sucksdorff. Currently Researcher of the Advanced Research Institute of the University of São Paulo. She was Tinker Visiting Professor School of the Arts /Ilas Columbia University; Visiting Scholar at DRCLAS Harvard University among others. She directed the CINUSP Paulo Emilio, and coordinator of the Laboratory of Audiovisual Investigation and Critique (LAICA). Research interests include culture industry, criticism, theory, and history of modern and contemporary audiovisual forms, gender relations, television, cinema and digital media.

Professora Titular de História do Cinema e do Audiovisual e de Projeto do Departamento de Cinema, Rádio e Televisão da Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo. Possui doutorado em Antropologia pela Universidade de Chicago, com a tese "Politics and Intimacy in Brazilian Telenovelas", publicada em português como " O Brasil Antenado, a sociedade da novela". Atua na confluência da Crítica e dos Estudos de Cinema e Televisão e Antropologia, na abordagem de temas como desigualdades sociais, relações de gênero e raça no cinema, na televisão e nas mídias digitais contemporâneas e na história recente. É atualmente Pesquisadora do Programa Ano Sabático IEA-USP. Foi Tinker Visiting Professor na School of the Arts / ILAS Columbia University, Visiting Scholar no Center for Latin American Studies da University de Harvard, Visiting Professor no Center for Latin American Studies da Universidade de Michigan e fez pós doutoramento na Universidade do Texas, Austin. Fez graduação e mestrado em sociologia na FFLCH da USP. Foi também pesquisadora do CEBRAP. Publica regularmente capítulos em coletâneas brasileiras e estrangeiras, artigos em revistas especializadas, e jornais da imprensa diária. Foi Chefe do Departamento de Cinema Radio e TV da ECA e diretora do CINUSP Paulo Emílio. É coordenadora do Laboratório de Investigação e Crítica Audiovisual (LAICA) e atual presidente da Associação Kinoforum.
