Diana Piroli
Diana Piroli is a Post-doctoral Researcher (Assegnista di ricerca) at the Institute of Law, Politics, and Development (DIRPOLIS) at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies. Research Area: Ethics and Global Challenges. She obtained her Ph.D., MA, and Bachelor's Degree in moral and political philosophy, mentored by Prof. Alessandro Pinzani and Prof. Denilson Werle at the University of Santa Catarina (2017-2021), Brazil, and worked as a research fellow at the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Catania (2022-2023), Italy. She also actively participated in Marie-Curie Rise Project's 'Kant in South America' (KANTINSA), coordinated by Prof. Luigi Caranti. Additionally, Dr. Piroli acted as visiting researcher in Argentina at CONICET (2023), in Belgium at Chaire Hoover - UCLouvain (2022), and in Germany at the Center for Humanities and Social Change Berlin at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2019-2020).Her work primarily concentrates on the relationship between theories of justice and recognition in liberal democracies. Inspired by Nancy Fraser's deontological turn and Rawls' political liberalism, her Dissertation proposed an innovative way for institutions to positively promote - or, at least, negatively not to injure - the primary social conditions so that people can develop their self-respect and self-esteem, without at the expense of the (cultural) pluralism. Dr. Piroli has recently extended her research to climate issues. Particularly, she has been investigating and publishing about: (a) the 'recognition dimension' in climate justice; (b) how the 'recognition dimention' yet analytical distinct can be compatible with the 'redistributive dimension'; and, more recently, (c) Carbon Budget fairness requirements towards present and future generations. At the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, Dr. Piroli actively participates in the Italian 'PRO3 Project: Theories and Toolkit for the Ecological Transition: Philosophical, Mathematical, Ethical and Legal Profiles of the Carbon Budget Sustainability Challenge' (Grant Number: PROGMIURC21_23AP), coordinated by Prof. Alberto Pirni. The Project is a research realized in partnership with the Scuola Normale Superiore and IUSS Pavia and financed by the Ministero dellUniversità e della Ricerca (MUR). At the Sant'Anna School, Dr. Piroli is also actively participating at the European Programm 'EELISA', within a research partnership between Sant'Anna School, Scuola Normale, the Institut Jean Nicod (PSL-ENS), and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
