He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering with Nuclear Emphasis from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1981) and a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering - North Carolina State University, USA (1985). He has been President of the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN), MCTIC, Brazil, 2015-2017, and from 2020-2022 was Designated Member of the National Council for Energy Policy, Ministry of Mines and Energy. Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), National Academy of Engineering (ANE), and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). Doctor Honoris Causa, Universite de Reims Champagne-Ardenne, France, and recipient of the Fellowship Award of the International Center for Heat and Mass Transfer, ICHMT.Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Center for Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT), 2016-2018. President, Brazilian Association of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering, ABCM, 2000-2001.
