João M. R. S. Tavares licenciou-se em Engenharia Mecânica na Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) em 1992. Obteve os graus de Mestre e de Doutor em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores, também na FEUP, em 1995 e 2001, respetivamente. Desde 2001, é Investigador Sénior e Coordenador de Projeto no Instituto de Ciência e Inovação em Engenharia Mecânica e Engenharia Industrial (INEGI). É Prof. Associado do Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica da FEUP desde 2011. Obteve a Agregação em Engenharia Mecânica pela Universidade do Porto em 2015.
Desde 2001, tem participado em vários projetos de investigação financiados, quer como investigador, quer como investigador responsável, e orientador e coorientador de várias Teses de Mestrado e de Doutoramento concluídas e em curso, bem como de vários projetos de pós-Doutoramento. Tem vindo a organizar numerosas conferências, workshops e simpósios nacionais e internacionais, bem como participado em comités locais e científicos de vários eventos nacionais e internacionais, sendo co- fundador e chair das séries de conferências internacionais CompIMAGE, VipIMAGE, BioDental e ICCEBS.
Atualmente, é coeditor de mais de 30 livros científicos, (co-)autor de mais de 30 capítulos de livro, 550 artigos em revistas e conferências nacionais e internacionais, e coautor de patentes internacionais e 2 patentes nacionais. É co- fundador e editor da série de livros Lecture Notes in Computational Vision and Biomechanics editada pela Springer, e fundador e editor-chefe da revista Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering: Imaging & Visualization publicada pela Taylor & Francis.
Dos seus atuais interesses de investigação destacam-se: Visão Computacional, Imagem Médica, Visão 3D, Visualização Científica, Biomecânica e Desenvolvimento de Produto.

João Manuel R.S. Tavares is graduated in Mechanical Engineering from University of Porto, Portugal (1992). In 1995, he obtained a M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, in the field of Industrial Informatics, also at University of Porto. In 2001, he obtained a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the same University, and in 2015 the Habilitation in Mechanical Engineering.
From 1995 to 2000, he was researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB). Since 2001, he has been senior researcher and project coordinator at the Laboratory of Optical and Experimental Mechanics (LOME) of the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI).
He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEMec) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) between 2001 and 2011, and since then he has been Associate Professor in the same department.
Since 2001, he has been supervisor and co-supervisor of several M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis and post-doc projects. He is co-author of more than 550 articles in national and international journals and conferences and co-editor of 30 international books and guest-editor of several special issues of international journals. Also, he has been evolved in several research projects, both as researcher and as scientific coordinator.
He has been co-chairman of various international conferences, including ICCEBS 2013, CompIMAGE 2006/2010/2012/2014/2016, VipIMAGE 2007/2009/2011/2013/2015/2017, EUROMEDIA 2008, BioDENTAL 2009/2012/2014, IMAGAPP 2009 and TMSi 2010, and of numerous mini-symposia, workshops and thematic sessions, and a member of organizing and scientific committees of several national and international conferences.
He has been a member of several national and international journal editorial boards and Editor-in-Chief of the T&F journal ?Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering: Imaging & Visualization? and Co-editor of the Springer book series ?Lecture Notes in Computational Vision and Biomechanics?.
His main research areas include computational vision, computational mechanics, scientific visualization, human-computer interaction and new product development.
