Engenheiro Agrônomo pela Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco-UFRPE (1975), Especialização em Silvicultura pela UFRPE (1975), Mestrado em Ciência Florestal pela Universidade Federal de Viçosa (1977) e PhD em Biometria e Manejo Florestal - University of Georgia (1986). Post-doc e Professor Visitante da University of Georgia (1991-1993) e da Technische Universität Berlin (2012-2013). Atualmente é Professor Titular do Departamento de Ciência Florestal da UFRPE. Atua como orientador, coorientador e professor em programas de pós-graduação aos níveis de Mestrado e Doutorado em Ciências Florestais e Biometria e Estatística Aplicada da UFRPE, e Mestrado Profissionalizante do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de Pernambuco (IFPE). Secretário Regional da Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC) (1999-2005). Membro do Conselho da SBPC (2005-2009 e 2017-2021). Membro da Diretoria da SBPC por quatro mandatos (2009-2017) onde coordenou o grupo de trabalho sobre o Código Florestal. Presidente da Academia Pernambucana de Ciências-APC (2018-2021), Acadêmico Emérito da Academia Pernambucana de Ciência Agronômica-APCA e da Academia Brasileira de Ciência Agronômica-ABCA, Acadêmico da Academia Nacional de Engenharia-ANE. Sócio benemérito da Associação Pernambucana de Engenharia Florestal-APEF. É revisor de trabalhos científicos e membro de conselhos editoriais de várias revistas científicas no Brasil e no exterior e consultor de várias fundações de pesquisa de Estados do Brasil. Membro do Conselho Nacional de Florestas (CONAFLOR/MMA), foi membro do Conselho Consultivo do Nordeste no MCTI (2010-2016), do Conselho Externo da Embrapa Florestas (Colombo-PR) e do Conselho Administrativo do Instituto de Tecnologia de Pernambuco (ITEP, 2013-2015). É pesquisador/consultor do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). Diretor de Programas da Secretaria de Ciência e Tecnologia de Pernambuco e Coordenador do Programa Pernambuco Verde (1996-1997). Tem experiência na área de Recursos Florestais e Engenharia Florestal, com ênfase em Dendrometria, Inventário Florestal e Manejo Florestal, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Estatística Experimental, Inventário Florestal e Técnicas de Amostragem, Análise de Regressão, Modelagem de crescimento de florestas de rápido crescimento e nativas. Atuou em divulgação científica como editor/redator do jornal eletrônico "Notícias da SBPC/PE" (1999-2019), e do Jornal Eletrônico da Informes da APC/SBPC-PE. Pesquisador homenageado no II Encontro Brasileiro de Mensuração Florestal com a Comenda Walter Bitterlich. Membro do Consórcio do Nordeste e Coordenador do Subcomitê de Modelagem Matemática e Estocástica da Covid-19(2020-2023). Líder do Grupo de Pesquisa/CNPq "Biometria e Manejo Florestal" e Vice-líder do Grupo de Pesquisa/CNPq "Tecnologia Ambiental e bioprocessos", Bolsista de Produtividade de Pesquisa do CNPq, nível 1B.

Currently, is Associate Professor IV in the Department of Forest Science UFRPE. Adviser and co-adviser Professor of the Undergraduate Program in Forest Engineering and Graduate Programs (Masters and PhD) in Forest Science and Biometrics and Applied Statistics of UFRPE. Associate Professor of the Graduate Programs (Masters and PhD) in Civil Engineering, UFPE, concentration in Environmental Technology and Water Resources, Professional Master Programs of the Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Pernambuco (IFPE) and the Institute of Technology of Pernambuco (ITEP). Member of the Board of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) where coordinated the working group of the Brazilian Forest Code. Is an effective member of the Pernambuco Academy of Sciences, Pernambuco Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Brazilian Academy of Agricultural Science and honorary member of the Pernambuco Association of Forestry. Reviewer of scientific papers and a member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals in Brazil and abroad, and consultant to various research foundations of States of Brazil. Member of the National Board of Forestry (CONAFLOR/MMA), the Advisory Board of the Northeast (MCTI), External Board of Embrapa Forestry, the Administrative Board of the Institute of Technology of Pernambuco (ITEP) and researcher/consultant to the National Council of Scientific and Tecnology (CNPq) and CAPES. Has experience in the area of Forest Resources and Forest Engineering, with emphasis on Dendrometry, Forest Inventory and Forest Management, acting on the following subjects: Experimental Statistics, Forest Inventory and Sampling Techniques, Regression Analysis, Modeling growth forests of rapid growth and native. Acts in scientific publishing as editor/writer of the electronic newspaper "News of SBPC / PE" since 1999.
