O Valmir recebeu o título de engenheiro agrônomo da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul em 1977. Defendeu sua dissertação de mestrado em Fitotecnia, orientado pelo Prof. Miguel Dalmo de Menezes Porto, em 1981, também na UFRGS. O doutorado, iniciado em junho de 1987, em Plant Health - Louisiana State University System, orientado do Prof. Christopher Alan Clark, concluiu em dezembro de 1990. Em 2001, tirou um ano sabático no Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Charlottetown, PEI, Canadá, trabalhando sob a orientação do Dr. Solke De Boer, cujo a pesquisa resultou na identificação da nova espécie Pectobacterium brasiliense, com maior número de citações entre seus artigos publicados. Iniciou sua carreira docente como professor no curso de Agronomia da PUCRS de Uruguaiana, RS, trabalhando durante 1980. No final daquele ano, iniciou como docente do curso de Agronomia da UFRGS. Atuou também como professor de fitopatologia no Centro de Ciências Agrárias, UFSC, em Florianópolis, do segundo semestre de 1981. Em 1998 e 1999, atuou no pós-graduação da Universidade de Passo Fundo. Passou a professor titular de fitopatologia da UFRGS em concurso público em 2002 e aposentou-se em 22 de setembro de 2011. Atuou na UFRGS como colaborador convidado, credenciado pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Fitotecnia, até abril de 2015. Sócio do Agronômica - Laboratório de Diagnóstico Fitossanitário e Consultoria e Agronômica até 17/08/2024. Proprietário da PHOM - Plant Health Open Market, empresa de consultoria. Tem experiência na área de Agronomia, com ênfase em Fitopatologia, atuando principalmente em assuntos relacionados à defesa sanitária vegetal.
Valmir received the title of agronomist from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 1977. He defended his master's thesis in Phytotechnics, supervised by Prof. Miguel Dalmo de Menezes Porto, in 1981, also at UFRGS. The doctorate, started in June 1987, in Plant Health - Louisiana State University System, supervised by Prof. Christopher Alan Clark, completed in December 1990. In 2001, he took a sabbatical at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Charlottetown, PEI, Canada, working under the guidance of Dr. Solke De Boer, whose research resulted in the identification of the new species Pectobacterium brasiliense, with the highest number of citations among his published articles. He began his teaching career as a professor in the Agronomy course at PUCRS in Uruguaiana, RS, working during 1980. At the end of that year, he began teaching in the Agronomy course at UFRGS. He also served as a professor of plant pathology at the Center for Agricultural Sciences, UFSC, in Florianópolis, from the second half of 1981. In 1998 and 1999, he served in the graduate program at the University of Passo Fundo. He became professor of plant pathology at UFRGS in a public tender in 2002 and retired on September 22, 2011. He worked at UFRGS as a guest collaborator, accredited by the Graduate Program in Plant Science, until April 2015. Partner of Agronómica - Phytosanitary Diagnosis and Consultancy and Agronomic Laboratory until 08/17/2024. Owner of PHOM - Plant Health Open Market, consulting company. He has experience in the area of Agronomy, with an emphasis on Phytopathology, working mainly on matters related to plant health protection.
