Full Professor of Sociology at the University of São Paulo (USP), head of the Observatory for Innovation at the Institute of Advanced Studies (USP) and head of the Humanities Area at the Center for Artificial Intelligence ? USP-IBM-Fapesp. Member of the coordination of the Solidary Research Network against Covid-19. He served as a Tinker Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2010), president of the Brazilian Agency for Innovation (FINEP, 2011-2015), president of the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA, 2003-2006), and general coordinator of the Strategic Unit (NAE ? 2003-2006, an advisory board to the President of the Republic). Former member of the International Advisory Group for the United Nations Development Program (2006-2009) and the Brazilian National Council of Science and Technology (2007-2010). Visiting scholar at MIT, research fellow at Columbia University, UC-Berkeley, and London School of Economics.

Professor Titular do Departamento de Sociologia da Universidade de São Paulo. Coordenador da área de Humanidades do Center for Artificial Intelligence-USP-Fapesp-IBM e do Observatório de Inovação e Competitividade do Instituto de Estudos Avançados (USP). Foi Presidente da FINEP (2011-2015) e do IPEA (2003-2006). Tinker Professor na Universidade de Wisconsin-Madison (EUA, 2010, 2022), integrou o Conselho Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia (CCT, 2007-2011). De 2003 a 2006 foi Coordenador Geral do Núcleo de Assuntos Estratégicos da Presidência da República (NAE). Foi membro do Group of Advisers do United Nations Development Programme (PNUD-ONU, 2006-2009) e Fulbright New Century Scholar (2009-2010). Professor do Departamento de Ciência Política da UNICAMP (1996-1997) e da Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV-SP, 1995). Realizou estudos de pós-doutorado no Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT (EUA, 1999 e 2010), na Universidade de Columbia (EUA, 2007 e 2009), na Universidade da California - Berkeley (EUA, 2008), na London School of Economics (Reino Unido, 2002).
