Ronald Buss de Souza

Graduated (BSc) in Oceanography at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG, 1988), MSc in Remote Sensing from the National Institute fro Space Research (INPE, 1992) and PhD in Oceanography from the University of Southampton / National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS, 2000). At the present holds a permanent position as a senior researcher at the Earth System Numerical Modeling Division of INPE. During 2019-2020 was Chief of Staff and Deputy Director of INPE. During 2016-2018 was the Head of the Southern Regional Centre for Space Research (CRS) of INPE in Santa Maria (RS, Brazil). During 2008-2016 was the Head of The Antarctic Program Service of INPE. Works as a researcher in projects linked to the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR) and an Associated Coordinatior of the National Institute for Science and Technology (INCT) of the Cryosphere. Was the Brazilian representative for the Polar Space Task Group (PSTG) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Was a member of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Data Advisory Council (WDAC), the SurFlux Task Team. Was a member of the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) Air-Sea Fluxes working group. Was a member of the Selection Committee of the Tinker-Muse Prize on Science and Politics in Antartica of SCAR. Is a member of the Southern Ocean Regional Panel (SORP) of CLIVAR/Clic/SCAR (World Climate Research Programme?s Climate and Ocean: Variability, Predictability and Change - CLIVAR Project; Climate and Cryosphere - CliC Project; Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research - SCAR). Is a member of the Near-term Variability and Prediction of the Antarctic Climate System (AntClimNow) Program of SCAR. Was the Brazilian national coordinator of PIRATA (Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic) project and is the representative of INPE in the Executive Committee of GOOS-Brazil (Global Ocean Observing System, Brazil). His experience is concentrated in the field of Physical Oceanography, focusing on mesoscale processes acting mainly on the following subjects: ocean remote sensing, South Atlantic and Southern Ocean oceanography, oceanographic instrumentation, air-sea interaction and fisheries remote sensing. Acts as an associated researcher to the following CNPq research group: GOAL - High Latitudes Oceanography Group (FURG). Author of several papers on scientific journals in the field of oceanography, remote sensing and atmospheric Sciences, acting also as a reviewer for many Brazilian and foreign journals. Has participated in many cruises onboard research vessels at the Southwestern Atlantic, Indian and Southern oceans. Works as advisor of the graduate program in Meteorology of INPE.
Possui graduação em Oceanologia pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG, 1988), mestrado em Sensoriamento Remoto pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE, 1992) e doutorado em Oceanografia pela Universidade de Southampton / National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS, Reino Unido, 2000). Atualmente é Pesquisador Titular III (topo de carreira) lotado na Divisão de Modelagem Numérica do Sistema Terrestre do INPE. Foi Chefe de Gabinete e Diretor Substituto (2019-2020), Chefe do Centro Regional Sul de Pesquisas Espaciais (2016-2018) e Chefe do Serviço do Projeto Antártico (2008-2016) do INPE no CRS em Santa Maria, RS. É pesquisador ligado ao PROANTAR (Programa Antártico Brasileiro) e Coordenador Associado do INCT Criosfera. Foi o representante brasileiro no Polar Space Task Group (PSTG) da Organização Meteorológica Mundial (OMM). Foi membro do World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Data Advisory Council (WDAC), o SurFlux Task Team. Foi membro do Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) Air-Sea Fluxes working group. Foi o Coordenador Nacional do Projeto PIRATA (Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic) e é o representante do INPE no Comitê Executivo do Programa GOOS Brasil (Global Ocean Observing System, Brazil). Tem experiência na área de Oceanografia Física com ênfase em processos de mesoescala, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: sensoriamento remoto dos oceanos, oceanografia física do Oceano Atlântico Sul e Oceano Austral, instrumentação oceanográfica, processos de interação oceano-atmosfera e sensoriamento remoto aplicado à pesca. É pesquisador associado ao GOAL - Grupo de Oceanografia de Altas Latitudes (FURG). Tem diversos trabalhos publicados em revistas especializadas da área de oceanografia, sensoriamento remoto e ciências atmosféricas, atuando também como revisor de diversas revistas científicas nacionais e internacionais. Participou de inúmeros cruzeiros oceanográficos em navios de pesquisa no Oceano Atlântico Sudoeste, Índico e na Antártica. Foi docente dos seguintes programas de pós-graduação: (1) Sensoriamento Remoto (INPE); (2) Sistemas Costeiros e Oceânicos (UFPR); (3) Biodiversidade Animal (UFSM); (4) Meteorologia (UFSM). Atualmente é docente do quadro permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Meteorologia do INPE.
