Background
Figueiredo graduated from the Dental School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil in 1983 and became specialist in Community and Preventive Dentistry in the same school in 1985. He undertook the MSc Course in Endodontics at the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) in 1990. He obtained his PhD in Endodontics in 1996, at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. In 1992, he became Lecturer of General and Oral Histology of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). In the same year, he became Lecturer in Endodontology of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), a position he held until 1997. He created and became Coordinator of the Specialty Course in Endodontics and then the MSc Course in Endodontics of the Brazilian Lutheran University in 1995 and 1997, respectively. This position was held until the year 2004. In 2004, he became Senior Lecturer and supervisor in Endodontics of the PhD level of the Postgraduate program in Dentistry at UFRGS. In the year 2005 he became a Clinical Lecturer in Endodontology at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, University College London, in London. Re returned to Brazil in the end of 2007 to become Coordinator of the Post-Graduate Program in Dentistry at PUCRS, until 2018. He held a private practice limited to Endodontics since 1990, until May 2018. Presently, he holds a full-time position at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS - as Vice-Provost of Research, as well as Professor and head.
Teaching
Figueiredo is Professor in Oral Biology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS. He teaches and supervises research at the Post-Graduate Program in Dentistry. He lectures to national and international professional bodies.
Research
Figueiredo?s primary research interest lies in the aetiology, pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of apical periodontitis. Various microscopic techniques are used for his studies. He has published widely, with over 226 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 3 books including the co-authorship of the book ?Endodontology? (Endodontics ? biologic and mechanic principles ? written in Portuguese), and a book of Histology for the Dental student (also written in Portuguese), 36 chapters in other books, and publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has also translated some popular Endodontology books from English to Portuguese. Additionally, he is editor of Revista Odonto Ciencia and member of the editorial board of important endodontic journals, such as International Endodontic Journal, Oral Diseases and Giornale Italiano di Endodonzia.

Possui graduação em Odontologia pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1983), Mestrado em Endodontia pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas (1990) e Doutorado em Endodontia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1996). Atualmente é Pró reitor de Pesquisa da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (PROPESQ - UFRGS). Também é Professor Titular de Biologia dos Tecidos e Biologia dos Tecidos Bucais da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, sendo Membro do Colegiado do Departamento de Ciências Morfológicas da mesma Universidade. Membro do corpo editorial de varias revistas cientificas internacionais e nacionais na Odontologia, bem como revisor de trabalhos para outras revistas de prestigio internacional. Publicou 3 livros, 39 capitulos em livros, 227 publicações em revistas com corpo editorial, entre outras. Bolsista Produtividade em Pesquisa PQ/CNPq 1C.
