Eduardo Antonio Barros da Silva

Eduardo Antônio Barros da Silva nasceu no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, em 1963. Se formou engenheiro eletrônico no Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME), Brasil, em 1984, Mestre em Ciências em Engenharia Elétrica na Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ) em 1990 e Ph.D. em Eletrônica na Universidade de Essex, Inglaterra, em 1995. Em 1985 trabalhou como engenheiro para o Departamento de Comunicação de Dados da EMBRATEL. Em 1986 trabalhou com engenheiro na IBM Brasil, fábrica Sumaré. Em 1987 e 1988 trabalhou no Departamento de Eletrônica do Instituto Militar de Engenharia, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Desde 1989 é professor do Departamento de Eletrônica da Escola de Engenharia da UFRJ. Desde 1996, também é professor do Programa de Engenharia Elétrica da COPPE/UFRJ. Publicou mais de 80 artigos em revistas internacionais e capítulos de livro publicou 6 livros internacionais, e possui mais de 200 artigos publicados em anais de conferências. Ganhou o "British Telecom Postgraduate Publication Prize", em 1995, pelo seu artigo em cancelamento de aliasing em codificação em subbandas, e o Google Latin American Research Award in 2019 e 2020 pelo projeto de detecção de focos do mosquito Aedes Aegypti usando técnicas de visão computacional e aprendizado de máquina. É também co-autor do livro "Digital Signal Processing - System Analysis and Design", publicado pela Cambridge University Press em 2002, com edições em chinês e português, publicadas em 2004. A sua 2a edição foi publicada em 2010. Foi "Distinguished Lecturer" da IEEE Circuits and Systems Society em 2003 e 2004. Foi, em 2006 e 2007, Editor Associado da IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems Part II, e, em 2002, 2003, 2008 e 2009, Editor Associado da IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems - Part I. Foi Deputy Editor in Chief da IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems: Regular Papers em 2016 e 2017. Foi também Editor Associado da revista Journal of the Franklin Institute, da Elsevier, e é membro do corpo editorial do periódico Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing desde 2006. Foi membro da "Board of Governors" da IEEE Circuits and Systems Society em 2012 e 2013, Vice Presidente de "Regional Activities and Membership" da mesma sociedade de 2014 a 2017, e foi "Regional Director para a América Latina e Canadá" da IEEE Signal Processing Society para 2018 e 2019, e é atualmente membro da "Conference Board" da IEEE Signal Processing Society. Foi, nos anos de 2013, 2014, e 2015, membro do IEEE Publications and Services and Products Board Strategic Planning Committee. Foi também conselheiro do Ramo Estudantil do IEEE da UFRJ de 2003 a 2009. Foi Conselheiro da Sociedade Brasileira de Telecomunicações, cargo que ocupou em 2006 e 2007, e de 2010 a 2013, e de 2018 a 2021. Foi também Vice-Presidente de Desenvolvimento e Difusão e de Atividades Técnicas da Sociedade Brasileira de Telecomunicações no período 2008-2009 e de 2014 até 2017, respectivamente. Tem prestado consultoria em vídeo digital para diversas operadoras de TV por assinatura e esteve envolvido na definição do Sistema Brasileiro de TV Digital. É atualmente "Requirements Vice Chair" do Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) da ISO/IEC (ISO/IEC JTC 001/SC 29/WG 01), e foi editor da Norma ISO/IEC CD 21794-2, Plenoptic Image Coding System (JPEG Pleno) - Part 2: Light Field Coding. Recebeu da ISO/IEC a"Excellence Award'" em reconhecimento pelo seu envolvimento excepcional no JPEG e as contribuições fundamentais a seus padrões, com especial relevância para a sua liderança no processo de normatização de codificação de Light Fields, em especial a especificação ISO/IEC 21974-2:2021. Seus interesses em pesquisa incluem os campos de processamento digital de imagens e sinais, especialmente codificação de sinais, TV digital, light fields, transformadas em wavelet, morfologia matemática, visão computacional, aprendizado de máquina e "big data", também suas aplicações a telecomunicações e à indústria de óleo e gás.

Eduardo Antônio Barros da Silva was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, in 1963. He got the Electronics Engineer degree from Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME), Brasil, in 1984, the M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ) in 1990 and the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Systems Engineering from Essex University, UK, in 1995. In 1985 he worked as an engineer for the Data Communications Department from EMBRATEL, In 1986 he worked as an engineer for IBM Brasil, Sumaré factory. Imn 1987 and 1988 he was a lecturer at the Electronics Department at Instituto Militar de Engenharia, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is now a full professor at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Since 1989 he has been teaching at the undergraduate course of the Department of Electronics from UFRJ, and since 1996 he has been teaching at the postgraduate course and doing research at the Program of Electrical Engineering from COPPE/UFRJ. He has published more than 80 articles in international journals and book chapters, has published 6 international book and more than 200 articles in conference proceedings. He has won the "British Telecom Postgraduate Publication Prize" in 1995 for his work in aliasing cancellation in subband image coding, and the Google Latin American Research Award in 2019 and 2020 for his project in automatic detection of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes using computer vision an machine learning techniques. He is co-author of the book "Digital Signal Processing - System Analysis and Design", published by Cambridge University Press in 2002, also with editions in chinese and portuguese, published in 2004. Its 2nd edition was published in 2010, and was also translated to chinese and portuguese. He was a Distinguished Lecturer from IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in 2003 and 2004. He was Associate Editor, in 2006 and 2007, of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems Part II, and,in 2002, 2003, 2008 e 2009, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems - Part I. He wasDeputy Editor in Chief of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems: Regular Papers in 2016 and 2017. He was also associate editor of the Journal of the Franklin Institute from Elsevier, in 2018 and 2019, and is part of the Editorial Board of the journal Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing, from Springer, since 2006. He was member of the Board of Governors from IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in 2012 and 2013, Vice President of Regional Activities and Membership of the same IEEE society from 2014 to 2017, and was Regional Director for Latin America and Canada from IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2018 and 2019, and is presently member of the Conference Board from IEEE Signal Processing Society. He was, in 2013, 2014, and 2015, member of the IEEE Publications and Services and Products Board Strategic Planning Committee. He was also Counselor of the Student Branch of the IEEE in UFRJ from 2003 to 2009. He was member of the board of the Brazilian Telecommunications Society (SBrT) in 2006 and 2007, from 2010 to 2013, and from 2018 to 2021. He was also Vice-President of Development and Difusion and of Technical Activities of SBrT in the periods 2008-2009 and 2014-2017, respectively. He is a consultant in digital video for several pay-TV operators in Brazil and was involved at the definition of the Brazilian Digital Television System. He is Requirements Vice Chair of the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) from ISO/IEC and was editor of the Standard ISO/IEC CD 21794-2, Plenoptic Image Coding System (JPEG Pleno) - Part 2: Light Field Coding, from which he received the ISO/IEC Excellence Award. His research interests include digital signal and image processing, specially signal coding, digital TV, light fields, wavelet transforms, mathematical morphology, computer vision, machine learning and big data, and also their applications to telecommunications and the oil and gas industry.
