Joao Pita Costa
JPC completed a PhD degree in Mathematics from the University of Ljubljana [ULj] in 2012, completed a Masters Degree in Mathematics from the Department of Mathematics of the University of Lisbon [FCUL] in 2007, and graduated in Mathematics from the University Lusofona [ULHT] in Lisbon in 2005,. Between 2001 and 2003, JPC has been a TA for the courses of algebra and topology with Prof. Teresa Almada at the University Lusofona in Lisbon. Between 2008 and 2012, the duration of his PhD, he was a Fellow at Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia [FCT]. Since obtaining his PhD degree, JPC published 8 papers in international peer review journals. 5 of the 8 research papers were published independently of the PhD supervisor and 6 were published as a senior (corresponding) author. Between 2008 and 2012, JPC has been a PostDoc at the Institute Jozef Stefan [JSI] in Ljubljana, Under the EU FP7 project Toposys. His research and teaching interests include algebra, topology, and topological data analysis.JPC s graduation dissertation at ULHT presented a student work on Birkhoff s subdirectly irreducible decomposition of algebras in the context of universal algebra. In his Master dissertation, JPC studied operations defined in the lattice of equivalences in the context of the study of congruence-permutable algebras. His PhD dissertation focused on a coset structure approach to the theory of skew lattices (i.e., noncommutative lattices as discussed in C.1.1, a theory in the intersection between bands of semigroups and classical lattice theory). JPC is a substantial part of the unpublished book on skew lattices soon to be submitted by J. Leech. During his PostDoc, JPC studied ordered structures in computation topology and their contribution to the generalization of persistent homology to a categorical approach (as discussed in C.1.1). During this research JPC had the opportunity to talk at 15 international conferences in the field of computational topology and 20 talks at workshops and seminars in European research institutions.
