holds a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Brasília (1988) with master's (1991) and doctorate?s degrees (1995) in Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology) from the same institution, having completed a two year sandwich-doctorate period at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom (1993-1995). Since 1996, he has been a researcher at the Institute Aggeu Magalhães (IAM), a unit of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Recife, Pernambuco. More recently, he carried out visiting scholar internships abroad at the Universities of Laval, in Quebec, Canada (2011-2012) and at the University of Heidelberg, Germany (2020). He participates in the postgraduate programs in Genetics at the Federal University of Pernambuco, and in Biosciences and Biotechnology in Health at IAM. He has experience in the areas of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Protozoology, with a focus on the study of pathogenic protozoa of the Trypanosomatidae family. He works mainly on the following research topics: studies in protein biosynthesis and regulation of gene expression in trypanosomatids; characterization of relevant antigens of Leishmania species; evaluation of new tools for the serological diagnosis of leishmaniasis and other infectious diseases.

Desde 1996 é pesquisador do Instituto Aggeu Magalhães (IAM), unidade da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) em Recife, Pernambuco. Mais recentemente realizou períodos de estágio pós-doutoral no exterior nas Universidades de Laval, em Quebec, Canada (2011-2012) e na Universidade de Heidelberg, Alemanha (2020). Participa nos programas de pós-graduação em Genética, da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, e em Biociências e Biotecnologia em Saúde do IAM. Tem experiência nas áreas de Bioquímica, Biologia Molecular e Protozoologia, com o foco no estudo de protozoários patogênicos da família Trypanosomatidae. Atua principalmente nos seguintes temas de pesquisa: estudos em biossíntese de proteínas e regulação da expressão gênica em tripanosomatídeos; caracterização de antígenos relevantes de espécies de Leishmania; avaliação de novas ferramentas no diagnóstico sorológico das leishmanioses e outras doenças infecciosas.
