Jan Steinhoff
PhD in Physics (Dr. rer. nat.) from Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (2010). Has experience in Physics, focusing on Relativity and Gravitation. My main scientific activity is devoted to approximate analytical descriptions of binary compact objects (black holes, neutron stars) in gravity theories. More specifically I am interested in the inclusion of higher multipoles of the compact objects, such as spin or quadrupole, into the post-Newtonian, post-Minkowskian, or extreme mass ratio approximations. The employed approach is an extension of the point-mass action in the spirit of effective field theories. This framework even allows to investigate resonances between the object's quasi-normal modes and orbital motion. This in turn leads to a natural connection to perturbation calculations for black holes and neutron stars. The main application are not only restricted to future gravitational wave astronomy, but also new perspectives on black hole entropy and evaporation can be expected from this research.
