He holds a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the Rio de Janeiro State University (1974), a Master's degree in Science (Microbiology) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1978), a PhD in Microbiology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Post-Doctorate from the University of California - Los Angeles (1990-1991). He is currently Full Professor of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He has experience in Microbiology, with emphasis on Biology and Physiology of Microorganisms, working mainly on the following topics: influenza virus, virus-cell adsorption process, viral neuraminidase activity and virus-cell fusion process. His work on the cellular receptors, using influenza viruses as model (especially in the articles: "Influenza Virus Strains Selectively Recognize Sialyloligosaccharides on Human Respiratory Epithelium; Role of the Host Cell in Selection of Hemagglutinin Receptor Specificity" and "Molecular Basis for the Generation in Pigs of Influenza A Viruses with Pandemic Potential", he has been referenced by a large number of experts in this subject. He was Advisor of undergraduate, masters, doctoral and postdoctoral students. He has been reviewer of several national and international journals, also participating in thesis examinations and public examinations and evaluation commissions of scientific events. He has developed work in the area of diagnosis by Molecular Virology, using influenza viruses, paramyxovirus and parvovirus (erythroviruses) as targets. He is experienced in the study of new antiviral drugs and the epidemiology of influenza virus and paramyxovirus infections.
Possui graduação em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (1974), Mestrado em Ciências (Microbiologia) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1978), Doutorado em Ciências (Microbiologia) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1986) e Pós-Doutoramento pela University of California - Los Angeles (1990-1991). Atualmente é Prof. Titular da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Tem experiência na área de Microbiologia, com ênfase em Biologia e Fisiologia dos Microrganismos, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: vírus da influenza, processo de adsorção vírus-célula, atividade da neuraminidase viral e processo de fusão vírus-célula. Seu trabalho no âmbito dos receptores celulares, utilizando vírus da influenza como modelo (especialmente nos artigos: ?Influenza Virus Strains Selectively Recognize Sialyloligosaccharides on Human Respiratory Epithelium; The Role of The Host Cell in Selection of Hemagglutinin Receptor Specificity? e ?Molecular Basis for the Generation in Pigs of Influenza A Viruses with Pandemic Potential?) tem sido referenciado por grande parte dos "experts" da área, em seus trabalhos experimentais e de revisão. Desenvolveu trabalho na área de diagnóstico por Virologia Molecular, utilizando vírus da influenza, paramixovírus e parvovírus (eritrovírus) como alvos. Ele tem experiência no estudo de novas drogas antivirais e da epidemiologia de infecções por vírus da influenza e paramixovírus.
