Matheus Palhares Viana

I am currently Research Staff Member at IBM Research Brazil in the group Visual Analytics and Insights. From 2012 to 2016 I was a Postdoc in the Developmental and Cell Biology Department at the University of California Irvine, working with Dr. Susanne Rafelski. I received my BS in Physics at the Federal University of São Carlos (Brazil) and my MS and PhD in Computational Physics from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) under supervision of Dr. Luciano da Fontoura Costa. The title of my PhD thesis was Modelling Geographical Biological Networks. My interests are broad and cover a lot of inter-disciplinary areas. In the last year I have been mostly working with Spatial Networks. During my PhD, my main project was the study of mitochondrial network morphology by applying novel 3D image processing and visualization techniques . I also developed works on urban networks, in which we tried to understand how cities evolve over time.
Matheus Viana is currently a postdoc at the University of California Irvine researching topics of image processing and network theory applied to cell biology.
