Carlos Alberto Gonçalves Silva Jared

He graduated in Biological Sciences with a doctorate in Biology (Comparative Morphology) from the Escola Paulista de Medicina, Federal University of São Paulo, a doctorate in History of Science (History of Medicine in Brazil) from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, and a postdoctoral in Integrative Biology from the Department of Zoology at the Institute of Biosciences at the University of São Paulo. He is a Scientific Researcher and Director of the Structural Biology Laboratory at the Butantan Institute. He is a Professor of the Graduate Program in Toxinology at the Butantan Institute and the Graduate Program of the Department of Zoology at the Institute of Biosciences of the University of São Paulo. He works in Comparative Anatomy, and Morphology correlated to the Biology and Natural History of amphibians and reptiles. His research is mainly directed to the knowledge of the glands and adjacent structures acting in chemical defence, both active (like that of reptiles) and passive (like that of amphibians). He also studies the biology of lizards and amphisbaenians, stressing the morphology of pheromonal glands responsible for intra and interspecific chemical communication. He also develops a line of research to understand Brazilian marsupials' biology and natural history, emphasising their ophiophagous behaviour and natural resistance to snake venoms. In the area of the History of Science, his interest is focused on the History of Medicine in Brazil, in the period of the founding of research institutes, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

É graduado em Ciências Biológicas, com doutorado em Biologia (Morfologia Comparada) pela Escola Paulista de Medicina, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, doutorado em História da Ciência (História da Medicina no Brasil) pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, e Pós-doutorado em Biologia Integrativa pelo Departamento de Zoologia do Instituto de Biociências da Universidade de São Paulo. Atualmente é Pesquisador Científico nível VI e Diretor do Laboratório de Biologia Estrutural do Instituto Butantan. É Professor do Programa de Pós-graduação em Toxinologia do Instituto Butantan e do Programa de Pós-graduação do Departamento de Zoologia do Instituto de Biociências da Universidade de São Paulo. Atua na área de Anatomia e Morfologia Comparadas, correlacionada à Biologia e História Natural de anfíbios e répteis. Suas pesquisas estão direcionadas principalmente ao conhecimento das glândulas e estruturas anexas atuando na defesa química, tanto ativa (como a dos répteis), como passiva (como a dos anfíbios). Estuda também a biologia de lagartos e anfisbênias, com ênfase na morfologia de glândulas feromonais, responsáveis pela comunicação química intra e interespecífica. Desenvolve também uma linha de pesquisa objetivando o conhecimento da biologia e história natural de marsupiais brasileiros, com ênfase no seu comportamento ofiófago e na sua resistência natural aos venenos ofídicos. Na área de História da Ciência, o seu interesse é voltado para a História da Medicina no Brasil, no período da criação dos institutos de pesquisa, entre o final do século XIX e início do XX.
