Holds a degree in Dentistry from the Federal University of Pernambuco (1982), Master in Dental Science - University of Birmingham (1991) and PhD in Clinical Dentistry - University of Birmingham (1993). He is currently a Full Professor at the Federal University of Bahia, Researcher 1B of the CNPQ, ad hoc consultant at the Amparo Research Foundation of the State of Amazonas, ad hoc consultant of the Foundation for Science and Technology Support of the State of Pernambuco, Araucaria, consultant - Studies and Projects Funding, ad hoc consultant of the Ministry of Health, consultant of the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel, consultant of the National Institute of Studies and Educational Research, consultant of the Ministry of Education, National Scientific and Technological Development, Member of several editorial committees and reviewer of national and international journals with emphasis on phototherapy and photobiology, working mainly in the following subjects: photo biomodulation, laser therapy, laser surgery, photobiology, photodynamic therapy, Biotechnology in Health, Biotechnology Industrial, Bioengineering and Engineering aria Biomedical. Chief Editor of Journal Photochemistry and Photobiology B. Currently co-ordinator of the PhD Program in Biotechnology at RENORBIO-BA.

Atualmente é Professor titular da Universidade Federal da Bahia, Pesquisador 1B do CNPQ, consultor ad hoc da Fundação de Amparo A Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas, consultor ad hoc da Fundação de Amparo à Ciência e Tecnologia do Estado de Pernambuco, consultor ad hoc da Fundação Araucaria, consultor - Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos, consultor ad hoc do Ministério da Saúde, consultor da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, consultor do Ministério da Educação, consultor ad hoc do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico , Membro de várias comissões editoriais e revisor de periódicos nacionais e internacionais com ênfase em fototerapia e fotobiologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: foto biomodulação, laserterapia, laser cirurgia, fotobiolgia, terapia fotodinamica, Biotecnologia em Saúde, Biotecnologia Industrial, Bioengenharia e Engenharia Biomédica. Editor do Journal Photochemistry and Photobiology B. Atualmente coordenador do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Botecnologia da UFBA e Vice-Coordenador do Programa de Doutorado em Biotecnolgia do RENORBIO-BA.
