My research is in the field of human-environment interactions in land systems. I seek to develop integrated approaches to study land use change by linking remote sensing, GIS and modeling (spatial and economic models). I aim at better understanding causes and impacts of changes in Brazilian biomes, particularly, the Amazon, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. I currently focus on three related themes: (i) the influence of global and regional drivers on land use decisions, (ii) the interactions between public and private governance aimed at promoting sustainable land use, and (iii) the identification of priority areas for environmental conservation.
