Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS, Porto Alegre, Brazil and Adjunct Professor at the ICRANet Faculty - International Center for Relativistic Astrophysics Network (Rome's La Sapienza University and ICRANet Center in Pescara, Italy). CAPES-ICRANet senior program). He has a bachelor's degree (1975), a master's degree (1978) and a doctorate (1986) in Physics from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre. He has research experience in Nuclear Physics, with emphasis on Nuclear Structure and Relativistic Nuclear Astrophysics, in Physics of Particles, in Field Theory and Gravitation, acting mainly in the following subjects: nuclear matter, neutron stars. quark stars, quasi-free scattering, and gravitation. He has experience in advising doctoral students in Brazil and abroad, has published more than 150 scientific papers in international journals, and has edited several scientific books, organized several scientific conferences of international (more than 25) and national (more than 20 ) scopes and has edited memoirs of these conferences. He was Pro-Rector of Research at UFRGS (from 2004 to 2008), member of the State Council of Science, Technology and Innovation of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (from 2006 to 2010), and member of the National System of Processing of High Performance - SINAPAD (from 2004 to 2008).

Possui graduação (1975), mestrado (1978) e doutorado (1986) em Física pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Tem experiência de pesquisa nas áreas de Física Nuclear, com ênfase em Estrutura Nuclear e Astrofísica Nuclear Relativística, em Física de Partículas, em Teoria de Campos e em Gravitação, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: matéria nuclear, estrelas de nêutrons. estrelas de quarks, espalhamento quase-livre e gravitação. Tem experiência na orientação de alunos de doutorado no Brasil e no exterior, tem mais de 150 trabalhos científicos publicados em periódicos internacionais, tendo ainda editado diversos livros científicos, organizado diversas conferências científicas de caráter internacional (mais de 25) e nacionais (mais de 20) e editado memorias destas conferencias. Foi Pró-Reitor de Pesquisa da UFRGS (de 2004 a 2008), membro do Conselho Estadual de Ciência, Tecnológica e Inovação do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil (de 2006 a 2010), e membro do Conselho do Sistema Nacional de Processamento de Alto Desempenho - SINAPAD (de 2004 a 2008).
