Graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Binghamton (1992) and obtained PhD in Ecology, Evolution and Population Biology from Washington University in Saint Louis (1999). Did postdoctoral work at the University of Konstanz, Germany (1999-2002), and at the Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis (2002-2004). In 2004 was a Fulbright fellow at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) and the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA). From 2005 to 2012 was Assistant and Associate Professor of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). In 2010 he was hired as Associate Professor of population genetics by the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM). In 2014-2015 did a sabbatical at Brigham Young University with Jack Sites. Has experience in the area of genetics and evolutionary biology with an emphasis in animal genetics, in the following principal research areas: conservation genetics, population genetics, quantitative genetics, molecular ecology and phylogenetic systematics. Studies mainly ichthyofauna, herpetofauna, primates and dolphins of the Amazon. Is a permanent member of the graduate programs in Genetics, Conservation and Evolutionary Biology (INPA since 2004), Ecology (INPA since 2014) and Zoology (UFAM from 2015). Between 2011 and 2014 was the coordinator of the graduate program in Biological Diversity (UFAM, 2006-2014). Is a collaborator in the graduate program Rede Bionorte (UFAM since 2011) and researcher at the Center for Applied Tropical Ecology and Conservation (UPR). Is review editor of Frontiers of Ecology and Evolution (ISSN 2296-701X) since 2013 and associate editor of the Journal of Heredity (ISSN 0022-1503) and PeerJ (ISSN 2167-8359) since 2015.

Em 2010 foi selecionado como Professor Adjunto na cadeira de Genética de Populações da Universidade Federal do Amazonas (UFAM). Em 2014-2015 fez um ano sabático na Brigham Young University com Jack Sites. Tem experiência na área de Genética e Biologia Evolutiva, com ênfase em Genética Animal, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: genética da conservação, genética de populações, genética quantitativa, ecologia molecular e sistemática molecular. Estuda principalmente ictiofauna, herpetofauna, primatas e golfinhos da Amazônia. Faz parte do corpo permanente dos professores orientadores do curso de pós-graduação em Genética, Conservação e Biologia Evolutiva (INPA, desde 2004), Ecologia (INPA, desde 2014) e Zoologia (UFAM, desde 2015). Entre 2011 e 2014 foi coordenador do programa de pós-graduação em Diversidade Biológica (UFAM, 2006-2014). Atua como colaborador no curso de pós-graduação da Rede Bionorte (UFAM, deste 2011) e pesquisador do Center for Applied Tropical Ecology and Conservation (UPR).
