Newton Carlos Marcial Gomes

Newton Gomes received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1999. Since then he has become a specialist in the field of molecular environmental and applied microbiology. He has published more than 100 papers in international peer reviewed journals, 3 patents, 1 book, 9 book chapters and his publications have accumulated more than 2000 citations (Scopus). On July 2009 he was responsible for the creation of the Laboratory for Molecular Studies of Marine Environments (LEMAM) at CESAM. Currently, his group consists of 2 Post-Docs, 1 MSc Researcher and 5 PhD students. The main area of scientific activity of Newton Gomes comprises investigation on microbe interactions with the environment and other organisms for a better understanding the response of microbial communities to environmental perturbation and their role on the maintenance of natural ecosystems and artificial systems.Newton Gomes has a special interest in Innovation and stimulation of entrepreneurship activities in the biotechnology sector. Currently he is co-Founder of DNA TRUSTAG a spin-off company of University of Aveiro (Portugal). The company was awarded in 2016 with the Seal of Excellence by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 (EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation). The seal certify the innovative character and commercialization potential of the technology developed in his group.
