Igor Lima Maldonado

IL Maldonado graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Bahia and in Mathematics from the Catholic University of Salvador. He underwent neurosurgical training at University of Paris VI (UPMC/CHU-PS) - Sorbonne Universités, University of Montpellier and Biocor Instituto (Brazil), and subspecialty training in Interventional Neuroradiology at the University of Montpellier. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Neurosciences from the University of Montpellier. He is an executive member and former vice-president of the Anatomy Committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, whose mission is to promote the neurosurgical anatomy among neurosurgeons worldwide. To enhance information exchange, the committee organizes regular educational events, with special emphasis on underprivileged areas. He currently works at the iBrain INSERM U1253 unit at the University of Tours and is a postdoctoral Research Fellow of the LE STUDIUM Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies. He conducts scientific investigations on the domains of cerebral connectivity and cerebrovascular diseases. His works have targeted the functional anatomy of the white matter, intraoperative brain mapping by direct electrical stimulation in awake patients, and endovascular neurological therapies. He has worked as a professor and neurosurgeon at the Federal University of Bahia, where he was head of the Laboratory of Anatomy and Dissection, and oversaw the implantation of the Neuromusculoskeletal Unit. This new medical unit assembled specialties related to the nervous and locomotor systems, as part of a larger program of the Brazilian Ministry of Education for revitalization of University Hospitals. He is a member of the European Society of Minimally Invasive Neurological Treatment, European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society, the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery and the Brazilian Academy of Neurosurgery.

É Neurocirurgião formado pela Universidade Paris VI - Sorbonne Universités, Universidade de Montpellier e Biocor Instituto, com subespecialização em Neurorradiologia Terapêutica pela Universidade de Montpellier. Obteve o grau de Doutor em Neurociências pela Universidade de Montpellier. É membro executivo, ex vice-presidente, do Comité de Anatomia da World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, que promove treinamento em anatomia neurocirúrgica entre jovens neurocirurgiões, com especial atenção aos países menos privilegiados. Encontra-se na Universidade de Tours desde Janeiro de 2018 trabalhando junto à unidade iBrain (U1253) do Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale e ao programa de pós-doutoramento do LE STUDIUM Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies. Conduz investigações acerca da conectividade cerebral e das doenças cerebrovasculares. Têm dado ênfase a estudos relacionados à anatomia funcional da substância branca, ao mapeamento cerebral intra-operatório com paciente acordado e às terapias neurológicas endovasculares. Atuando como neurocirurgião e professor da Universidade Federal da Bahia, foi coordenador do Serviço de Neurocirurgia e Chefe da Unidade Neuro-Músculo-Esquelética durante sua implantação no Complexo Hospitalar Universitário Prof. Edgard Santos / EBSERH, uma unidade mista que reuniu as especialidades relacionadas ao sistemas nervoso e locomotor do adulto. É membro da European Society of Minimally Invasive Neurological Treatment (ESMINT), da European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, da Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society, da Academia Brasileira de Neurocirurgia e da Sociedade Brasileira de Neurocirurgia.
