Prof. Dr. Ronald José Raminelli

Ronald Raminelli has a PhD in History from Universidade de São Paulo (1994). He is a Professor at the Department of History at Universidade Federal Fluminense and researcher 1A at CNPq and Faperj in Brazil. He received a research fellowship at Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut in Germany (1994-1995), École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales - France (2002-2003), Universidad de Murcia in Spain (2012). He was an associate researcher at Universidade Estadual de Campinas in Brazil (2011-2012), Associate Editor of The Oxford Encyclopedia of Brazilian History and Culture da Oxford University Press/New York (2017-2022), and The Robert F. Kennedy Visiting Professor at the Romance Language and Literature Department at Harvard University, sponsored by The David Rockefeller Center for Latin-American Studies/ Harvard University (Cambridge 2022). His areas of academic expertise are colonial history, the idea of race, and nation between the 16th and 19th Centuries. Among his many publications, it is worth mentioning Imagens da Colonização (1996), Viagens Ultramarinas (2008), and Nobrezas do Novo Mundo (2015). In the new research project, he intends to analyze how Blacks and mulattos were inserted into projects of nation-making in the 19th Century. Drawing on novels and memoirs, he examines not only the controversies between pro-slavery and antislavery politics but also the portrayal of racial diversity and the idea of the nation in Cuba and Brazil.

Ronald Raminelli é professor titular da Universidade Federal Fluminense, pesquisador 1A do CNPq, Cientista do Nosso Estado da FAPERJ e com doutorado em História Social pela Universidade de São Paulo (1994). Teve financiamento de pesquisa no Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (Berlim 1994-1995), Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (Lisboa 1999), École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris 2002-2003), Universidad de Murcia (Murcia 2012) e na Harvard University (Cambridge 2022). Atuou como Associate Editor da The Oxford Encyclopedia of Brazilian History and Culture da Oxford University Press/New York (2017-2022). Ministrou curso como The Robert F. Kennedy Visiting Professor no departamento de Romance Language and Literature - Harvard University, financiado pelo The David Rockefeller Center for Latin-American Studies/ Harvard University (Cambridge 2022). Recebeu da Universidade Federal Fluminense o Prêmio de Excelência, na modalidade Prêmio UFF de Excelência Científica categoria Ciências Humanas e Sociais Aplicadas (2018-2019). Pesquisou as hierarquias sociais no Antigo Regime, a ideia de raça e hierarquia racial vinculados ao sangue, defeitos mecânicos e à cor da pele. Atualmente estuda os debates sobre a escravidão, em memórias e romances, investiga particularmente a ideia de raça e nação em Cuba e Brasil no século 19.
